About This Pub
Ah, The New Inn – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a traditional British spot, with its 15th-century coaching inn vibes and that lovely courtyard that just begs for a sunny afternoon drink. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the staff stand out as the real stars; they're incredibly attentive and make every effort to sort out any requests, whether you're popping in for a meal or staying overnight. The food's generally a winner too, with home-cooked dishes like the steak and ale pie getting high praise for being tasty and filling, and the rooms offer that unique, character-filled charm you'd expect from such an old building. On the flip side, it's not all smooth sailing – one chap mentioned a disappointing roast dinner that felt like it was just reheated scraps, which is a shame if you're counting on a proper pub grub fix. Plus, it can get a bit quiet, so if you're after a lively chat with strangers over a pint, you might find it lacking that buzz. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed getaway or a quiet meal, but it's worth keeping an eye on the timing to avoid any letdowns – just like sharing tips with mates over a round, I'd say give it a go if you're in Gloucester, but go in with realistic expectations for a balanced experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building and pretty courtyard create a really welcoming and atmospheric spot, perfect for a relaxing pint or a stay in one of the unique rooms.
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – super friendly and always ready to go the extra mile, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
Home-cooked food hits the spot with generous portions; that steak and ale pie is a proper treat, and it's clear they put heart into their meals.
-
It's a great choice for those who appreciate a bit of history mixed with modern comforts, especially if you're after a cosy pub with a nod to the past.
Cons
-
Some dishes can fall short if you're there later in the evening, like that roast dinner that seemed more like warmed-up leftovers rather than fresh.
-
The place can feel a bit quiet or empty at times, which might not suit if you're hoping for a buzzing, lively crowd to chat with.
-
With no clear operating hours listed, it might be tricky to plan a visit without checking ahead, potentially leading to a wasted trip.

Just been there for a roast dinner turned up late ish around 19:15 thought that’s when k as they serve roast dinner untill 9. I was suspicious that no one else was eating roast in fact it was almost empty. So the dinner was obviously just leftovers put on a plate and put on n the oven vegetables were like mush and the meat was over cooked and dried up.To be fare the roast potatoes and mash and Yorkshire puds were ok. We also waited 30 minutes for this and the only other order before us was for a jacket potato. The roast cost £14.95 I paid a extra £3.95 for extra meat I received one slice of beef and one slice of gammon so I paid £3.95 for one slice of gammon my partner paid £14.95 for hers and she got 3 slices of beef. I won’t be going back there ever no wonder it was empty. And yes the toilets we’re disgusting dirty dated and with dried skid marks in the toilet.
Really enjoyed our stay here. We visited for lunch some time ago and decided to come back and stay, which finally did last night.
If you are interested in historic buildings, then I would definitely recommend the New Inn. There can't be many places where you have the opportunity to stay in a medieval inn which is this well preserved, particularly as it is supposed to be the finest example in Britain of a medieval galleried inn.
The price was very reasonable even though we had the Lady Jane Suite, which I think is their most expensive room.
The staff are very hospitable, friendly and welcoming. Shannon is very knowledgeable about the history of the building and took the time to talk to us about it, which was really interesting. The two staff who were behind the bar when we first arrived were also great (sorry guys - I didn't get your names).
The only reason I gave four stars rather than five is because it does need some work in places. They are however in the process of upgrading the building, including reinstating some of the original features that have been altered over time. So I've saved the fifth star for our next visit!
I had an amazing stay at the new inn.
They were super accommodating for all of our needs and fitted us in last minute and sorted any request.
James, Rhys and Becca made my stay amazing being super friendly and attentive.
Thanks for everything guys
The staff was outstanding! The young blonde lady who checked us in in the afternoon, went out of her way to make our stay exceptional! The steak and ale pie was the best we ever had! The new end, which is extremely old, is exactly what we expected. We did not expect new rooms, but ones with character. That is exactly what we got! The best part of our stay, were the people who work there. The cook in the evening, came to us several times and asked us if we needed anything.
We would definitely stay there again. We highly recommend this place to anyone who goes for character and personality of beautiful England!
A very pretty courtyard leads to unique rooms off the surrounding gallery in this 15th century coaching Inn. The bar has been refurbished to blend a modern look with the old oak beams and has a good selection of drinks. The food is home cooked and the portions are plentiful.
All the staff were friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay.
Some reviews mention noise from the street but we didn't hear anything and our stay was a Friday night.
Lovely place and we will definitely stay again.
