About This Pub
Ah, The Montpellier in Harrogate – what a spot for a casual get-together over a pint! From the reviews I've had a look at, it's got this fantastic outdoor area that's a proper sun trap, ideal for whiling away an afternoon with friends and a cold beer in hand. The staff often come across as genuinely friendly and professional, dishing out great recommendations and keeping things cheerful, which really adds to the traditional pub charm. Beers like Landlord and Red Stripe are highlights, and the overall buzz makes it feel like a welcoming local haunt. On the flip side, though, there are a couple of stories where things went south – like a cheeky response to a simple coffee request or an abrupt nudge to get another drink – so it might not suit everyone if you're after something a bit more accommodating. Still, with a solid 4.4 rating from plenty of folks, I'd say it's worth popping in for, as long as you go in expecting a classic pub experience with its highs and the occasional low. All in all, it's a place that does the basics brilliantly but could polish up on the niceties now and then.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got a lovely outdoor sun trap that's perfect for enjoying a pint on a sunny day, making it a real gem in Harrogate.
-
The staff are generally friendly and welcoming, with some brilliant banter and a real knack for knowing their beers.
-
They offer a great selection of beers on tap, like the classic Landlord and Red Stripe, which always hit the spot.
-
The atmosphere is spot on – it's a traditional English pub that feels lively without being overwhelming, especially during quieter times.
Cons
-
There have been a few instances where the service felt a bit rude or sarcastic, like when someone was cheekily told off for asking about coffee.
-
It might not be the best choice if you're after non-alcoholic options, as it seems very pub-focused and could leave you feeling a tad disappointed.

One of the best pubs I've walked into not knowing anything about it.
Beautiful sun trap and Red Stripe on tap!! What more do you need?!
We dropped in here before the nearby walking tour started and sat outside in the sun with a pint or three. Friendly, hospitable staff and customers. Great pint of Landlord.
I had a very bad experience. The owner asked me to go get an other drink pointing at the bar, then specified it had been 20 minutes since I had finished mine. It was sunny, but not busy outside and there were many free chairs. Also I had already purchased a drink. I went inside to get an other drink but also mentioned that never happened to me before, (nor in Paris nor in New York!) so he added that because I made a remark about it that was going to be my last drink, basically kicked me out. I felt discriminated, and actually had no reason to treat me like that. I was politely talking at his tables and enjoying the company of an other customer I had just met.
Incredibly bad manners, rude and also discriminatory
On wider reflection that place is a black sheep on the road, all places are fresh, refined, have wide choice of food and drinks. That place has no kitchen and a modest choice of drinks and snacks. The furniture inside is dusty and rundown.
Really a black sheep for the Harrogate standards, both in terms of people and offer.
Only good thing is that they have tables outside.
We dropped into this traditional English pub on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year, and were very impressed. Nicely busy ( but not rammed ), with a great atmosphere, and the bar staff were a definite 5 stars: professional, friendly, good banter, and also really knew their job. They were also an exercise in perpetual motion; no chance of sticky elbows in the Montpellier as every table was wiped down as soon as it was free. We were in there for not much more than an hour, but when we called in again later that night, they remembered us, and what we'd been drinking! Will definitely call in again next time we're visiting Harrogate.
Not friendly and sarcastic. A generous rating considering! I asked if they did coffee and their response was, “we’re a pub, does it say Starbucks above the door? I have rated 3 stars but in reality they only deserve 1 or none. Disappointing.
