About This Pub
Ah, The Marquis is one of those pubs that just pulls you in with its timeless charm – think a grade 2 listed building from 1520, complete with wooden beams and a lovely log fire that makes you want to settle in for the evening. They've nailed the traditional English fayre, serving up proper grub that's hearty and well-prepared, paired with a fantastic array of ales and spirits that could keep you chatting for hours. The beer garden's a real highlight too, with those heated areas making it perfect for a catch-up whatever the weather. The team behind the bar are spot on, always up for a natter and remembering your go-to drink, which adds that extra touch of homeliness. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses – I've heard a few stories about the kitchen playing up, like not being open when you'd expect or facing delays because they're stretched thin, and the prices for food can feel a bit steep if you're keeping an eye on the pennies. Still, for a relaxed night out, whether it's for pre-dinner drinks, watching some live sport, or just enjoying the vibe with friends, it's a solid choice that strikes a nice balance between the good and the not-so-good.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building from 1520 gives it such a charming, old-school feel, like stepping into a slice of Colchester's past.
-
They serve up delicious traditional English pub grub that's done really well, with plenty of hearty options to satisfy.
-
A cracking selection of premium ales, gins, and spirits means there's something for everyone, whether you're after a classic pint or something a bit fancier.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive, remembering your usual drink which makes every visit feel personal and welcoming.
-
The beer garden is an absolute treat, especially with those heated marquees, so you can enjoy it rain or shine with mates.
Cons
-
There can be hitches with the kitchen, like it not opening when expected or long waits if they're short on staff and prioritising bigger groups.
-
The food prices are a tad on the steep side compared to other local spots, which might put a dent in your wallet.
-
It gets busy at times, and that can lead to service not being as smooth as you'd hope, especially during peak hours.

Google maps says kitchen is open all day.
Staff informed us kitchen opened at 6:30PM.
Waited for 45min, then we were informed they wouldn’t serve food as there was a table of 11 they had to prioritize and the kitchen unfortunately didn’t have enough staff.
The outside area is nice in the summer, staff is polite, but customers are hangry.

I haven't been in this pub for years. Good beer and nice food. I shall be back
Pub grub, expensive compared to others in the area.
Nice pub located on a busy street but once inside you wouldn’t know it.Nice staff remember what you drink. Not eaten in here yet so can’t comment on that one.
A fantastic pub at the bottom of north hill. Great service at all times and they do great food and good offers too. Fantastic bar garden and also show live sport. The pub has a lot of character due to being founded in 1520.
