About This Pub
Ah, The Green Room – it's one of those spots that always sticks in my mind as a hidden gem in Colchester, tucked away at the North Hill Hotel. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this warm, inviting feel that makes you want to linger over a meal, with staff who go out of their way to make sure you're comfortable, whether that's letting you pick your own table or suggesting local eats while the restaurant's shut. The food sounds like a real treat too; folks rave about the Sunday roasts and traditional British dishes that are both tasty and affordably priced, paired with a solid wine selection for those evenings that stretch on. It's especially charming on a sunny day in the courtyard, where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a proper meal without the fuss. On the flip side, it's a bit gutting that it's closed at the moment, so you might have to hold off on visiting until they get back up and running – and without any recent buzz, it's tough to say what's changed. Still, based on the solid 4.5 rating from past visitors, I'd say it's worth keeping an eye on for when it reopens, as it could be just the place for a relaxed get-together with friends over some hearty grub.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and make you feel right at home, always happy to help with seating or recommendations.
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think brilliant Sunday roasts, high-quality British classics, and a great wine list that won't break the bank.
-
It's got a lovely atmosphere, especially in the courtyard on a sunny day, making it perfect for a relaxed meal or a catch-up with mates.
-
Prices are reasonable, offering good value for delicious dishes like pot pies and toffee pudding that leave you wanting more.
Cons
-
It's currently closed, which is a real shame as it means you can't pop in for a bite just now, though the hotel is still running.
-
There haven't been any recent reviews in the last six months, so it's hard to know if things have changed since the last positive feedback.
-
No specific operating hours are listed, which could make planning a visit a bit tricky once it reopens.

The Green Room is a brilliant place for a Sunday Roast. Atmosphere and staff were amazing as well. With the staff happily letting us sit where we wanted, to which we chose to sit in the courtyard. And as it was a sunny day, it shone through so beautifully. We ordered the the Roast Beef and this was spectacular!! Medium done beef with not too overpowering horseradish sauce, served with crispy but not sickening potatoes and fresh veg with a large yorkie. I left the restaurant feeling extremely satisfied. Would highly recommend!!
Hubby had a Father's Day celebration of great British cuisine at reasonable price. Friendly staff, quick service and comes highly recommended! 👍
LOVED this place! High quality and broad menu while also having traditional British food. Went here for a date, we started with a cheese plate, split their two different pot pies, and ended with their toffee pudding. Absolutely delicious and so reasonably priced! Can’t wait to go back.
We had a nice little private area just as you come in close to the bar. Our waitress was very friendly and the food was excellent. Good wine list so will be a nice place for winter drinks.
With family down we thought we would try somewhere we hadn't been before and the Green Room had been recommended to us - we went on a sunday afternoon.
The place is tidy / clean and staff were nice and friendly. We got seated and got drinks, some got starters and others just got mains. A few of the options on the menu are on slightly more expensive side, particularly on starters but generally not too badly priced. Was a bit worried about paying 6 quid for kids meals as I hate paying for them to only then have 2 or 3 bites, but it turned out they were free with a paying adult meal!
Food was very nice, some of us had roast dinners with choice of either beef or chicken. I think we all enjoyed it!
Not quite the full 5 stars as we had a rather excessive wait between starters and mains, to the extent that kids (1 and 3) had finished their meals which came out with starters before mains turned up - they really are not fast eaters!! Not end of the world stuff... but was our experience.
Can't comment on desert as everyone was too full to try anything!!
Worth a vist if you are looking for a nice place that is not a chain restaurant etc.
