About This Pub

Ah, The Malt Shovel – it's one of those classic pubs that you stumble upon in Castleford, and from what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got a lot going for it if you're after a relaxed spot for a pint. Most folks rave about the friendly staff who make you feel welcome, and the beer selection is spot on, with mentions of great local brews that hit the spot. It's also praised for being clean and offering good value, plus there's a car park which is handy if you're popping in by car. On the flip side, one person had a bit of a rough time with staff who weren't in the best mood, and it can feel a bit too quiet or off at certain times, which might not suit everyone looking for a bit more buzz. Overall, it's worth checking out for a laid-back drink, especially if you're into darts or just fancy a chat, but maybe plan around those short opening hours to avoid disappointment – it's all about getting the timing right for a proper enjoyable visit, mate.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are usually really friendly and make you feel right at home, which is just what you want after a long day.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers, including local Taddy ones, perfect for a proper pint.
  • It's great value for money, so you won't break the bank enjoying a drink or two.
  • The pub is lovely and clean, with a welcoming atmosphere that makes it feel like a proper local spot.
  • There's a handy car park around the back, which is a bonus if you're driving over.
Cons
  • One review mentioned the staff being a bit unfriendly and off-putting, which could spoil the evening if you're not lucky.
  • It can feel a tad quiet or uncomfortable at times, especially if you're hoping for a lively vibe.
  • The opening hours are quite limited, mostly just a couple of hours in the afternoon, so it might not be ideal for spontaneous visits.
