About This Pub

Ah, The Malt Shovel – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local haunt in Birmingham, where you can swing by for a full day out, from a hearty breakfast to evening cocktails. I've got to say, the food really steals the show; their stone-baked pizzas and carvery are fresh and flavoursome, and it's clear from the chatter that folks love the generous portions that leave you feeling well satisfied. The staff often shine too, with mentions of helpful servers who make sure you're looked after, adding that personal touch that makes a visit memorable. Plus, with all those deals on offer and a community-focused vibe, it's easy to see why it's a favourite for a casual meal or a family gathering. On the other hand, it's not perfect – there are times when service slows down a notch, perhaps when it's quieter than expected, which can make you wonder if they're a bit under the weather that day. And the atmosphere can be a little on the quiet side, with the music not always pumping to liven things up. All in all, though, it's a solid pick for us pub enthusiasts looking for good value and a welcoming spot, as long as you go in with realistic expectations for a laid-back experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious pizzas made with fresh dough and hearty carvery roasts that hit the spot every time.
  • Service is generally warm and attentive, with staff like Emily and Lisa going above and beyond to make you feel right at home.
  • It's brilliant value for money, with daily deals like 50% off pizzas and burgers, plus a rewards app for freebies that keeps things exciting.
  • A real family-friendly spot with plenty of options for veggies and vegans, making it easy to find something for everyone.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes drag a bit, like when you're left waiting at the bar even if it's not too busy, which puts a slight dampener on things.
  • The atmosphere might feel a tad subdued at times, with the music not quite lively enough to get the energy going.

We tried this for the first time today and really enjoyed it - the food was very tasty and the service provided by Lisa and Ellie was very helpful and friendly. Oat milk was requested and surprisingly provided! The atmosphere was nice although the music could have done with being louder. We hung around afterwards and felt very welcome there. We shall definitely be back - thank you!

Breakfast was amazing !! Lisa was an absolute darling in seating us and making sure we had the absolute best experience. She made it as comfortable as home. My hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows went down a treat!! Will definitely be coming back!!

Didn't get off to the best start, stood at the bar to order for 5 minutes before someone served us. Then walked through to the restaurant side of the pub to be waiting again for another 5 minutes to be served food, all this even after the staff saw us waiting. The place was empty at 6pm on a Tuesday. Anyway, once the person who cuts the meat arrives we got served , 2 nice slices of meat gammon and turkey, helping yourself to vegetables plus bubble & squeak. Got to say the meal was absolutely delicious the gammon was not salty, and the turkey was moist and tasty. I would definitely recommend this place for somewhere to eat. Carl
