About This Pub
Ah, The Malt Shovel – it's one of those pubs that really grows on you if you're after a proper, down-to-earth spot in Beeston. I reckon it's got that classic British charm going for it, with friendly staff who make you feel like a regular from the get-go, and the food can be an absolute treat, especially with the menu upgrades under the new owners. You've got your hearty pub grub alongside some nicer twists, and it's brilliant for a pint or two with a solid range of beers. Plus, being dog-friendly adds a nice touch for those walks in the area. But, fair warning, it's not all roses – some folks have mentioned the portions being a tad small, and the prices can sting a bit, like when you're hit with a service charge on top of already pricey meals. It might feel a smidge traditional for younger crowds, and if you're expecting massive plates for your money, you could end up a bit disappointed. Overall, though, with a solid 4.2 rating, it's a reliable choice for a good night out, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe skip the fancy dinners if you're on a budget.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are really friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
The food's often spot on – think tasty pub classics and some more adventurous options, especially since the new owners stepped in.
-
It's got a cosy, warm atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
-
They're super dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for the outing.
-
A great selection of beers on tap, including real ales and craft options, which is a win for any beer enthusiast.
Cons
-
Portion sizes can be a bit stingy, leaving you wanting more after the meal.
-
Prices are on the higher side for what you get, with some meals and drinks feeling overpriced, like that £9 sausage or hefty bills with service charges.
-
Not everyone loves the vibe – it can come across as a bit of an old-school pub, which might not suit those after something more lively.
-
Food quality seems inconsistent; some visits are brilliant, but others fall flat and don't feel worth the money.

Recent Reviews
We had a Sunday roast at the Malt Shovel Inn today and we're very disappointed to the portion sizes. Looking at other people's reviews our meals were even more on the stingy side and certainly not worth nearly £30 for the two of us!
I think they must have run out of parsnips and roast potatoes as there were only one potato (cut in half) and half a parsnip each. Sadly not the advertised 'all the trimmings'.
The interior was a bit dark and dingy except for the window seats.
I think we'll be sticking with our regular bigger named carvery in the future.
They call this ‘traditional pub food’ . I wasn’t impressed £9 for sausage. £9:75 for the pie.
Glass of coke and a tonic water bill was over £27!
And note the 12 1/2 % service charge written on top of the menu!
The menu also state voted ‘ best restaurant in the city’ ….
It also asks for a review on google, so here it is…
I really enjoyed visiting this pub. Staff were friendly and the food was gorgeous. Lovely and cosy atmosphere too. I recommend ! But it is a little more pricey than normal (my meal was £11)
The Malt Shovel has new owners and they've improved the place no end. It was always an OK food pub, but they've really improved the menu.
A few pub classics, plus some more adventurous stuff.
Very dog friendly.
Good place for a beer with five real ales plus craft and the usual mass produced stuff.
The online ordering system works really well and the staff are very happy for you to order in the traditional manner if you prefer.
Great staff and a very friendly atmosphere.
Decent Sunday dinner. Good value for money. Bit of old man's pub. Parking for about 5 cars. Menu also had some nice tapas and typical pub dishes.
