About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The Magpie – it's one of those hidden gems in Carlisle that you stumble upon and think, 'Why haven't I been here sooner?' From the reviews, it sounds like a proper traditional pub with a cosy interior and a roaring fire that just begs for a relaxed evening. The outdoor area with its bowling green is a brilliant touch, perfect for whiling away a summer day with friends and a cold drink. Prices are fair too, so you can enjoy a few rounds without worrying about the tab. On the flip side, though, there's a recent heads-up that it might be closed and looking for new owners, which is a bit gutting given its solid 4.4 rating from folks who've loved it. Plus, being a Sam Smith's spot, you're stuck with their brews and no real ale or food options, which could be a letdown if you're after variety. All in all, if you're in the area and it's up and running, it's definitely worth a visit for that authentic pub vibe, but I'd recommend giving them a ring first to avoid any disappointment.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The pub has a lovely interior with a real fire, making it a cosy spot for a chat on a chilly evening.
-
Friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere that really makes you feel at home, as if you're catching up with old mates.
-
Outdoor seating and a bowling green add a fun twist, ideal for enjoying a sunny afternoon with a drink in hand.
-
Prices are spot on – very reasonable for drinks and activities like bowling, so you won't break the bank.
Cons
-
It looks like the pub might be closed right now, based on a recent visit where it was shut and up for new owners – a real shame if you're planning a trip.
-
No food on offer, which means you'll have to head elsewhere if you're after a bite to eat with your pint.
-
As a Sam Smith's pub, it doesn't serve real ale, so if you're a fan of a good craft beer, you might be left wanting more.

Recent Reviews
Sadly, Looks like this place is closed for business. We visited having read the great reviews but unfortunately they were shut down and advertising for new owners. Bowling green was pristine so someone’s shooting some bowls but the pub is RIP.
No food. A great example of a Harry Redfern designed government pub.
Sam Smith's pub. No real ale , unfortunately.
Lovely interior, including a room with a real fire.
I suspect that it's great outside in warmer weather, with the garden and bowling green.
Pleasant lady behind the bar.
Usual Sam Smiths drinks and prices.
THE MAGPIE, A HIDDEN GEM
Staying in east Carlisle for a couple nights while doing the Hadrian's Wall Walk, we found the Magpie, off Warwick Road, and what a magnificent hidden gem of a pub it is.
10 minutes off M6 J43, with car park.
I've never seen a pub with a Crown Bowling Green before and can just imagine how much of attraction this could be if promoted correctly, with their outside rear terrace and space for more benches around the sides.
Owned by the Samuel Smith brewery, we tried all 4 of their lagers, which range from 5% to 3.4% abv. We liked them all. Exceptionally good prices too. £7.50 for two pints of different lagers including a 50g packet of crisps. £6.40 without the crisps. One of the lagers was only £3 a pint!
There's a pool table in the saloon with enough seating in the bar, so you're not forced to be a spectator. There's a separate lounge bar too, which was equally popular when we visited on the evening of the Thursday Jubilee Bank Holiday.
The tenant landlords have only been there 2 months but are very friendly and said they want to start putting on food soon.
The only negative thing is the selection of spirits on their optics, appear to be the brewery's own brands too. My friend likes gin, while I prefer whisky, but there was nothing either of us recognised.
I thoroughly recommend the Magpie, especially if you're only visiting Carlisle for a few nights.
We went there to play bowls this afternoon. The pub has a lovely friendly atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable for both bowling and drinks with a lovely outdoor seating area too. A lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Great for away fans, good value quality burgers and very decent beer. Very friendly, just mind your P's and Q's.
