About This Pub

Ah, The Magnet Pub – what a gem of a micropub it is, tucked away near North Station in Colchester. I've got to say, the real highlight for me is the beer; they're all about those locally sourced ales and craft brews, kept in pristine condition, which makes it a haven for anyone who loves a good pint. The staff are just lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, and that cosy atmosphere with the beer garden out back is perfect for unwinding after a day out. It's dead handy being so close to the station too, especially if you're popping in for a quick one. On the flip side, it's not exactly in the heart of town, so you might find yourself trekking a bit to get there, and with the space being quite compact, it can get a little snug if it's busy. Plus, food options are slim – no proper meals on site, though grabbing something from the chippy next door works in a pinch. Overall, it's a solid choice for beer enthusiasts looking for a relaxed, authentic pub experience, but keep those points in mind if you're after something more central or spacious. I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on – they've got a fantastic range of locally sourced ales, craft beers, ciders, and even some keg options, all kept in top condition.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's a cosy little spot, perfect for a relaxed chat, with a nice beer garden for when you fancy some fresh air.
  • Dogs are welcome, which is brilliant if you're out with your furry mate, and it's just a short stroll from the train station, ideal for a quick stop-off.
  • You can bring in food from the chippy next door, which adds a nice touch of flexibility if you're peckish.
Cons
  • It's a bit of a walk from the town centre, so if you're not near the station, it might not be the most convenient spot.
  • The space is on the smaller side, so if you're with a larger group, it could feel a tad cramped at times.
  • They don't serve much in the way of food themselves, which means you're limited to what's available nearby or bringing your own.
  • Their opening hours vary a bit and they're closed one day a week, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning a visit.

Small independent bar, very friendly staff, two casks, on both in good condition, two ciders as well and keg taps. There was six of us but we fitted in ok, nice little spot near the train station to kill an hour or two.

To my shame this is my first visit to The Magnet. Lovely place! Friendly, cosy, clean, and excellent beverages! Highly recommend

A light, airy pub for drinking some different craft ales and beers. They don't really do any food, but there is a chip shop next door and they are happy for you to bring it in and eat while you have some drinks. I guess the only pain is location... its a fair bit of a walk from town although I'd imagine it's a great location if heading home back to the train station!

Well kept (regularly changing) cask ales. Even had one with Sabro hops in which is rare. A nice bonus is that St Botolph's brewery beers are sold here too (the brewery is in the Colchester area)these are well worth a try. A nice range of craft beers in can and bottle are also available. Bar snacks and whiskeys available. A physical beer list on every table which is a nice touch. Comfortable, clean, nice mix of modern and classic pub styles. Really friendly staff. Good prices. Short walk from Colchester mainline Station. Town centre and Colchester Town Station is just a few mins further, in the opposite direction up the hill.

Great conversion from the old pub to this new micro pub. Excellent choice of ales and craft beers, well decorated and beer garden for those wanting fresh air. Highly recommended.
