About This Pub
You know, I reckon The King Richard III is one of those hidden gems down by Scarborough's South Bay – it's got this lovely historical feel, named after the king himself, and it's just across from the harbour, so you're treated to cracking views while you sip your drink. The food's a real highlight; they go out of their way to cater for all sorts, like gluten-free roasts with proper gravy and Yorkshires, which is a breath of fresh air if you're watching what you eat. The staff are an absolute delight, always on hand with a smile and quick to sort you out, and it's brilliant for families or if you've got the dog in tow. On the flip side, that business of paying upfront before your meal arrives feels a tad odd at first – it's not the usual way things go in a pub, and it might make you wonder if they're worried about no-shows, but it does keep the service zipping along. All in all, it's a solid choice for a bite and a bevvy, with more ups than downs, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after a relaxed spot with good grub and a bit of history thrown in.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely brilliant, with fantastic options for dietary needs like gluten-free, making it a real winner for those with allergies.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always providing top-notch service that makes you feel right at home.
-
It's wonderfully dog-friendly, with a dedicated area in the bar, so you can pop in with your furry mate without any fuss.
-
The historical setting in a Grade I listed building is charming, and the harbour views from the outside seating are just gorgeous for a relaxing drink.
-
They've got a wide and varied menu, covering breakfast through to dinner, with plenty of choices including kids' options, all freshly made to order.
Cons
-
The system of paying at the point of ordering can feel a bit unusual and less traditional, which might put some off even if it does keep things efficient.
-
A few mentions of the Sunday roast being just okay rather than outstanding, so it might not always hit the spot for that classic pub meal.

Brilliant, booked a table for Sunday roast. Food was fantastic and so rare for my wife who is Coeliac to get a full gluten free roast to include the gravy and obligatory yorkshire pudding.
Staff were great too. Excellent.
Very friendly, dog friendly pub/restaurant. Excellent food choices and when it arrived, which was very prompt it was very tasty and hot.
Service was excellent and staff very helpful and friendly. Having to pay at point of ordering is a little unusual but sped the service up and probably protects the business against those who walk away without paying. Highly recommend a visit if you’re passing.
We didnt eat, we just had a drink and used the toilets. A fabulous place with links to its named King. Very historic and attractive building. Nice staff and good guiness!
Staff were friendly but the concept of ordering and paying at the table before eating was a bit strange, we assume they must have people who leave without paying. Would prefer to order at the bar if that's the case. Sunday roast was OK and pudding was delicious. Dog friendly which is great and we had a great table near a door which isn't used so she could lie down which was fab. They also managed to accommodate the 6 of us a couple of hours earlier than what we booked.
Being asked to pay before food and drink is consumed in a place where you are seated by staff, indicating table service I felt was the only negative but since everything else was positive: Helpful staff, prompt service and good communication and awareness of allergies etc I'm awarding a 5 but it was nearly a 4. Historical and interesting setting. Friends happy with tea. Curry sauce good. My own personal taste is cauliflower slightly better done but I ate it all. Good portion of diet coke. Attention to detail. Would recommend.
