About This Pub

Ah, The John Millington – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away on Station Road in Cheadle Hulme. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks really rave about the food; those Sunday roasts sound like a must-try, with options galore and dishes that come out looking and tasting spot on. The staff get a big thumbs up too – they're always on hand with a smile and quick service, which makes the whole experience that bit more enjoyable. Pair that with a cosy, well-laid-out space and some cracking real ales, and you've got yourself a solid spot for a relaxed afternoon or evening out. On the flip side, it's not all roses; I've seen a mention of the food not always hitting the mark, like with some chewy beef that left one visitor a bit underwhelmed. And let's be honest, it does get heaving at times, especially on weekends, so planning ahead is probably wise if you don't fancy queuing. Overall, it's a place I'd happily recommend for a good meal and chat, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – after all, it's the little ups and downs that make these spots feel real and relatable.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, especially their Sunday roasts – I've heard the pork is a real winner, and there's plenty of choice for everyone.
  • The staff are always friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a lovely, bustling atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates, and the pub is well-spaced out so you don't feel crammed in.
  • They keep a great selection of real ale beers in top condition, which is a treat for anyone who appreciates a proper pint.
  • With an overall rating pushing 4.4, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a solid experience time and again.
Cons
  • Food quality can sometimes fall short, like with that chewy roast beef one person mentioned – it's a shame when it happens, as it might put a dampener on things.
  • It gets pretty busy, particularly on Sundays, so you might need to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
  • While most visits are fantastic, there are occasional slip-ups that remind you it's not perfect every time.

Great little Sunday roast in here. I had the platter with my partner and we really enjoyed it. The roast pork was especially tasty. I’d come Back just for that next time. Plenty of options if you’re not into a roast too. Will be back. Recommend booking on a Sunday as very busy.

I advance booked a table for 8, including one with mobility issues, on a Sunday 1430. The table was ready on our arrival and drinks were offered and served. We had pre arranged our likely menu preferences and after confirming no changes we sat down to an excellent variety of dishes (6 plus a platter for 2). We then had a number of sweets which were super quality if a little pricey. Overall a great experience. I marked down one star for atmosphere because there was a large raucous adult party. Staff had tried to isolate them but their noise filled the place.

We visit regularly as we always find the menu has plenty of choice and the food is always really good quality and well presented. Staff always very friendly and helpful. Husband enjoys the real ale beers and they are kept in good condition. We recommend this pub/restaurant.

Never eaten here before.. Nice atmosphere on arrival and a good well spaced out pub. Opted for the 2 meat roast whilst my wife had the 12hr roast beef lunch. On appearance looked very appealing but unfortunately the roast beef which was my first taste was very chewy. So tried another piece from which again was very chewy. So tried the turkey which was OK but had a rather old taste to it.. the star of the show was the vegetables. The swede mash was nicely seasoned as well as the red cabbage. 2 half cut roast potatoes.. underseasoned and cold have at least had a couple more. The gravey again was lacked flavour but that is my personal taste. For the price it was OK in all but in all was disappointed in comparing with other pub roasts we have had. Nice atmosphere though and great for families.

My son and I went in half 6 Saturday evening having just phoned ahead to check. Pub was bustling with a good atmosphere and the restaurant was filling up. Lovely friendly staff tended to us throughout the meal which was delicious! I had the chicken fillet, which had lovely crispy skin and the caramelised onion and potato gratin was fantastic and all held together with a great sauce. He had rump steak, medium rare, which was really nicely cooked. Desserts were equally good. I had sticky toffee pudding which was moist with lots of toffee sauce and a really generous helping of ice cream. He had the chocolate and salted caramel cake which was chocoholics heaven! Highly recommended.
