About This Pub
Ah, the Hen & Chickens Theatre Bar – it's one of those places that just draws you in with its warm, characterful atmosphere, tucked away in Highbury & Islington. I've got to say, what really stands out is how welcoming the staff are; they're chatty and attentive, making you feel like you're catching up with old mates rather than just popping in for a drink. The pub's got this brilliant bohemian edge, complete with an intimate upstairs theatre that's ideal for a laugh over some stand-up or a film screening, and don't forget the dog-friendly policy and that urban beer garden for when the weather plays nice. The drinks selection is spot on too, with plenty of options to explore, whether you're after a classic pint or something a bit more adventurous. On the flip side, though, there've been a few whispers about unprofessional moments from staff that could sour the experience, so it's worth keeping in mind that not every visit might be flawless. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening, offering that authentic London local feel, but I'd suggest going in with an open mind to get the best out of it.

Love coming to this pub usually great being served by lovely bartenders but I’m so appalled in the behaviours I have witnessed by a worker Nadine. Outside in the smoking area I witnessed her smoking cannabis, this is highly unprofessional and might I add illegal. I’m not usually a Karen but the way she spoke when serving me was very rude, she could not be bothered to be there and I couldn’t help but overhear her bad mouthing her colleagues. Very disappointed with what’s going on at this pub.
I joined a few friends for a couple of drinks after work, and while I don’t normally love Highbury & Islington (feels a bit too woke for me), this pub really surprised me. The staff were super friendly, the beer selection was great, and it’s dog-friendly - so there’s a good chance you’ll make a new four-legged friend during your visit.
I’ll definitely be going back to try the food and check out the upstairs theatre… yes, there’s a theatre above the pub! Thanks for a lovely evening.
Writing this review to pay a particular thank you to Nadine. From the first time she served me, she was chatty and bubbly and actually pulled me out of a bad mood that I was in. She really left me with a great impression of her and the pub and hope to have service like this in the future. I didn’t catch the other bar guys name (tall, handsome, great hair) but he was also lovely. Thanks team! Xx
We booked the Hen and Chicken for 20 people very last minute for our pre wedding drinks last weekend. It wasn’t a problem for Nadine, and when we arrived an hour later she’d set us up with the high tables we requested and was welcoming and very accommodating from the moment we stepped in. The wedding was a surprise for our guests and Nadine helped us keep it that way, helping to stash some of our wedding stuff and keeping everyone well watered. We couldn’t have asked for more from her, and she really helped our day to be what it was. At some point during the day everyone said ‘and how lovely was that barmaid today’. It’s the kind of place you’d pop in for a swift one and end up staying all afternoon. If you want a well looked after pub in a top location, with great drinks and service with smile, this is the place for you.
Great pub, right in the heart of the action.
You get a great warm feeling the minute you walk in the door, by very welcoming staff.
I attended for a film screening in the cinema upstairs which had great retro seating, and was nice and warm. With great sound system.
I’ll be back!
