About This Pub
Ah, The Grey Lantern – what a gem it must have been back in the day, tucked away in Birmingham's heart. From what folks have shared, it was all about that easy-going charm, where you could grab a pint for just a few quid and settle in for some footie on the telly or catch a live band playing indie hits. The staff sounded like absolute stars, always up for a laugh and quick to suggest a non-alcoholic option if you weren't in the mood for a beer, making it feel inclusive for everyone. It's got that solid 4.2 rating, backed by some glowing reviews praising the friendly crowd and reasonable prices, like feeling part of the gang on a quiet evening after work. But here's the downside – it's closed permanently now, which is a bit of a gut punch for anyone who enjoyed its straightforward, no-fuss appeal. If you're hunting for similar spots, it'd be worth seeking out places with that same community spirit, as this one clearly had something special going for it, even if the decor was nothing to shout about. All in all, it's a reminder that good pubs come and go, but the memories linger on.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The drinks are incredibly affordable, with pints around £3 to £3.75 – perfect for a budget-friendly night out without breaking the bank.
-
The staff are super friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, whether you're into sports, music, or just a chat.
-
It's got a lively atmosphere that's great for watching sports or enjoying indie tunes, with a stage for live bands and options for non-alcoholic drinks if you're not drinking.
-
Everyone seems to have a good time, with reviews highlighting how inclusive and community-oriented the place feels, like being part of the family.
Cons
-
Unfortunately, it's closed for good now due to a skyscraper development, so you won't be able to pop in for a pint anymore – a real shame for such a local favourite.
-
The decor is pretty basic, nothing fancy to write home about, so if you're after something more stylish, it might not hit the mark.
-
There's no website or much online presence, which makes it tricky to get the latest info or plan a visit in advance.

Was a great pub 🍻 nice and cheap but due to a sky scrapper now going up is closed for good ! Very sad gonna miss the place.
On a recent visit to Birmingham discovered this little gem. Immediately drawn by the outer appearance, and the inside did not disappoint. Lovely staff, beautiful food, very reasonably priced (£3 a pint!) and everyone inside was friendly and sharply dressed. Felt like part of the family.
My first experience in a sports bar did not disappoint! Lovely atmosphere, the bartender was very friendly. When I told her that I did not drink alcohol, she gave me several options from their non alcoholic range. Will definitely visit again
Great place for a pint and watch whatever sport is on.
Friendly service, beer incredibly cheap (£3.75 for a pint of staropramen), basic decor but who cares when you can just chill out after a day at work.
New venue for indie fans.
Very cost, warm and welcoming - and theres a stage for bands too!
Plays absolute indie tunes ✌🏼 and everyone’s sound af!
