About This Pub

Ah, The Golden Slipper – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a hidden gem in the heart of York, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews and details, it's got this warm, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for sinking into a comfy corner with a pint of their excellent real ales or a crisp cider. The staff really make the place; they're dead chatty and make you feel like a regular straight away, which is always a plus when you're out for a casual drink or a bite. The food sounds spot on too – people rave about the Sunday roasts and pies, saying they're packed with flavour and just the thing to round off a day. Plus, being dog-friendly and having a nice outdoor spot means it's versatile for all sorts of outings. On the flip side, though, the entrance can be a bit of a head-scratcher, so you might need to keep your eyes peeled to find your way in. And it's a shame about the website being down; it makes it harder to plan ahead or check what's on offer. Overall, it's got a solid 4.4 rating, which isn't surprising given the glowing feedback, but I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after a proper pub experience – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Golden Slipper has a fantastic selection of beers, lagers, and ciders, including top-notch real ales that are always in great condition – perfect for a proper pint lover.
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got that lovely traditional multi-room setup with a cosy, old-world interior that's just charming for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • They're super dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out with your furry friend, and there's a nice outside area for when the weather's playing ball.
  • The food is a real highlight – think delicious Sunday roasts and hearty pies that hit the spot, especially after a day exploring York.
Cons
  • The website isn't available anymore, so it's a bit tricky to check menus or opening times online before you head over.
  • Some folks might get confused with the entrance – it's not the most obvious, so you could end up wandering around a bit.
  • The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent based on what's out there, with some info suggesting early closes, which might catch you out if you're planning a late one.

The Golden slipper is a nice traditional multi-room pub. There is a good selection of beers, lager and cider, including four hand pulled cask conditioned real ales which were in excellent condition on our visit. The staff are very welcoming and the pub is dog friendly. There is also a nice outside seating area behind the pub. I haven't tried the food, so I can't comment, but the beer is excellent it's a great pub. A visit is highly recommended.

Madge reminded me of my visit here in 1993. It was a Saturday and The Grand National Steeplechase was on. Captain Cockup set half the horses off. The other half did not start. Oh well, google it. Good pub but only two real ales on today. Lovely old world interior. Had a good pint of Rudgate Battlefield bitter. ( Lots of battles here abouts ..victory for the English at Stamford Bridge over the Vikings in 1066 led a few days later to the Normans taking a 1000 year control of England. Almost all our Elite are still their descendants!) Small rear beer patio. Like the music. Cask Marque pub.

What a beautiful pub, came in for a drink during ghost week and I will be returning. Friendly bar person and felt really relaxed and lovely. Would recommend. Entrance door is to the left, I assume some people may get confused how to get in or think it's part of the pub next door. I originally walked in the pub next door for a drink and I walked out again and came into this one and I'm glad I did. Really loved the atmosphere and the genuine feel I got from the staff

Absolutely the best meal we had in York. We had the chicken and leek pie and it was amazing! Great pastry and flavours. The wine list was also great and the hand pumped ales. Such a secret gem in York!
