About This Pub
Ah, The Gate Hangs Well – it's one of those classic pubs in Stourbridge that you might stumble upon and think, 'This could be a gem.' From what I've gathered, the staff really shine through; they're friendly, efficient sorts who make you feel welcome, whether you're there for a quick pint or a longer catch-up. The beer garden is a highlight, especially on a sunny day – it's spacious and they've got that marquee for rainy spells, so you can still enjoy a drink outside without getting soaked. Plus, the real ale is spot on, and the music selection adds a nice touch to the ambiance, making it a go-to for anyone who loves a good traditional boozer. On the flip side, though, the food's a bit of a mixed bag; some folks have mentioned small portions that don't quite hit the mark, with pies that aren't as flaky as you'd hope and dishes that arrive less than hot. It's a shame because it could elevate the whole experience. And when it's not busy, the place can feel a tad quiet and in need of a refresh – maybe a bit of updating to bring it back to its best. All in all, if you're after solid drinks and a chat with mates, it's worth a visit, but I'd suggest skipping the grub or keeping expectations in check for a balanced night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – friendly and quick with service, making you feel right at home.
-
They've got a cracking beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun, and it's got a marquee for when the weather turns.
-
The real ale is top-notch, and whoever picks the music has excellent taste, adding to the cosy vibe.
-
It's kept spotlessly clean, which makes for a welcoming atmosphere overall.
Cons
-
The food can be a real letdown – small portions, not piping hot, and the pastry on the pies is chewy, which isn't ideal for the prices.
-
When it's quiet, like on a weekday lunchtime, there's not much atmosphere, making it feel a bit flat.
-
The place could do with a bit of a spruce-up; it seems like it needs some refurbishing to freshen things up.

Nor been here for a year or so and very disappointing visit today. Food not good and small portions for the prices including desserts. Pastry on pies chewy and food not hot. Not many people in for a Friday lunchtime so no atmosphere.
i dont know who cleans the pub on mondays, tuesdays, and thursdays, but they are the best cleaner in the world!!!! Also they have a really cute staff member named prince, he is the best ♥
Cracking traditional pub with great service from Lauren and Becky.
Enjoyed my HPA which went down rather swiftly 😂
Whoever chooses the music certainly has good taste.
Will definitely return.
Real ale and traditional pub lovers will appreciate 🍺💯
Boston wor it. Graham was great whipping out the drinks. Amazing large beer garden for those sunny days and the marquee is up for the wetters
The carling is a good pint and there’s sports on the tv. The place could do with a refurb
