About This Pub

Ah, The Gas Works Brewbar – it's one of those places that really captures the heart of a good night out in Manchester. Picture this: you're stepping into a spacious, beautifully designed space with that industrial charm mixed with a modern twist, making it feel both homely and exciting. The on-site brewery is a proper gem, churning out a fantastic array of beers, from their own fresh brews to a rotating selection of guests and even alcohol-free options, so there's something for every taste. The food doesn't disappoint either; I'm talking about hearty pub classics with a spicy Korean flair, like flavour-packed chicken that's juicy and satisfying – it's the kind of meal that leaves you smiling. The staff are genuinely friendly and make you feel welcome, and the addition of games like shuffleboard and darts just adds to the fun. But, to keep it real, there are a couple of downsides; you might find yourself having to leave abruptly for a private booking, which can throw a spanner in the works, or notice that some dishes aren't quite spot-on, like burgers where the ratios feel a bit wonky, and the odd missing touch, such as wipes for messy fingers. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a pint and a bite – I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after a balanced mix of vibes, variety, and good times, just keep an eye on the timing for those private dos.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's spacious, with a beautiful industrial vibe that's cosy yet modern, making it perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • They've got an incredible selection of beers, including their own brews straight from the on-site brewery, plus guest options and even alcohol-free choices to suit everyone.
  • The food is a real highlight; think classic pub grub with a twist, like spicy Korean dishes and juicy chicken that's full of flavour and comes in generous portions.
  • Friendly staff who handle things professionally, and fun extras like shuffleboard and darts add a playful element to the evening.
  • It's in a great location in Manchester's First Street, blending rustic heritage with a contemporary feel that makes you want to linger.
Cons
  • Occasionally, you might have to wrap up early if there's a private event, which can feel a bit abrupt even if it's done politely.
  • Some dishes, like the burgers, might not hit the mark perfectly – for instance, the bun-to-burger ratio could be off, leaving you wanting a bit more balance.
  • Little things like needing to ask for side plates or missing out on handy wipes for sticky meals can make the experience feel a tad less polished.
  • One of the dart boards might not always be in top nick, which could put a damper on plans for a quick game.

Nice modern bar. Great selection of beers. Working brewery in operation. Shuffle board and darts were great fun. Wasn't impressed after ordering a round at 5.30pm to be told we had to vacate the premises by 5.40, because there was a private event. However, it was done politely and professionally and only slightly inconvenienced us. All in all, it was a good experience.

Lovely place, very nice crew. Wide variety of brews (also AF) and some (very!) spicy „Korean pub food“. Recommended

This spot is a real find, offering fantastic value with a tasty range of dishes that really hit the mark. The portions are bigger than you’d expect, and the chicken is especially juicy and packed with flavour. It’s one of those meals that leaves you feeling satisfied without overdoing it. The vibe here is laid-back, making it a great place to relax over lunch. There’s also a good selection of games to keep things fun while you eat. With its reasonable prices, delicious food, and chilled atmosphere, it’s a go-to spot for a tasty, laid-back meal.

Got the Thief Street chicken 2 person sharing platter at £42. It was tasty, the burgers were okay but I felt the burger to bun ratio was a bit off. Had to ask for side plates and given the stickiness of the meal some lemon hand wipes would have been a nice addition. Wanted to play darts, one wasn't working the other was supposed to be working but kept neglecting to register the throws so we got a refund and an apology. Some areas of the venue look like they need a deep clean and to be upholstered. Dust in a few places. Tables seemed to take quite a bit of time to get cleared of glasses and food. Staff are lovely though and it's generally always a good experience when we've been previously.

Great atmosphere when we walked in. Came here as part of a food day out in Manchester and wasn't disappointed. Had the Nom Noms, very nice, but strange eating a meat filled donut! 🤔 also had Korean chicken, also very nice, washed down with a refreshing Elderflower lager 👍
