About This Pub

Ah, The Gade and Goose in Hemel Hempstead – it's one of those pubs that has a certain charm if you look past the rough edges, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff are absolute gems; they're friendly and make you feel like you're catching up with old mates, which is always a plus for a good night out. The quiz nights sound like a blast, and the drinks are reasonably priced, with pints that folks say are spot on. Plus, they've done some renovations lately, which has lifted the atmosphere a bit and made it more enjoyable overall. But honestly, it's not all rosy – the place can feel a tad gloomy with its dull lighting and decor that hasn't changed much since the swinging sixties, and that might leave you with a bit of an unwelcoming feeling, especially if the regulars give off that 'locals only' vibe with those odd signs on the door. There have been a few scary stories about fights breaking out, which is a real shame and might make you hesitate before popping in for a casual drink. All in all, it's worth a visit if you're up for a traditional pub experience with some entertainment, but keep your expectations in check and maybe go with a group for a safer, more fun time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are really friendly and welcoming, which makes you feel right at home as soon as you step in.
  • They've got some great entertainment options, like quiz nights that sound like a proper laugh with mates.
  • The drinks are fairly priced and there's a decent selection, including pints that hit the spot just right.
  • It's been spruced up with some renovations, giving it a fresher feel that improves the overall atmosphere.
Cons
  • The interior feels a bit gloomy and outdated, like it hasn't seen a proper update since the 1960s, which can make it less inviting.
  • There's an unwelcoming vibe from some of the regulars, almost like you're intruding, especially with those confusing 'members only' signs.
  • Lighting is a bit dull, which adds to that gloomy feeling and might put you off wanting to stay for long.
  • There have been reports of dodgy incidents, like fights, which makes you think twice about visiting, especially in the evenings.

Good music, friendly staff but the minute you walk in the door it’s very gloomy and just a feeling of being unwelcome by the regulars probably not helped by the dull lighting and interior. It’s alright for an entertainment night in the side bar but not somewhere you would immediately think of for a drink

I don't think it's been decorated since 1960 and whats with the members only signs everywhere? Other than that staff are friendly drinks prices are fair and the quiz night was a lot of fun!

Had an unexpected late evening visit for a pint and a short the other evening. The customers who greeted us were fine, explaining that the "members only" signs on the door were irrelevant. The barman was less jovial, maybe he'd had a long shift? We'd just missed quiz night but did sit through and interesting game of musical bingo which seemed to be enjoyed (and understood) by the 12 people playing

Absolutly dangerous and awful place, tonight while there I saw an incredably violent fight break out, which was broken up, the participants were continously fighting and one of them smashed a bottle over the others head and they started trying to stab eachother. The were eventually kicked out but no police were called reguadless of the fact there were dangerous weapons being used. Then shortly after someone smashed a pool cue across another arm, they were thankfully removed by a bar member, no managers were seen at all during this entire time nor afterward, they didnt check on their staff members whatsoever. The police were not called at all, essentially condoning this violent behaviour. I would never step foot in there again. Also upon seeing other reviews I see that they've had many issues with violence, with no changes to how it's dealt with, and have no issue lying to customers, claiming they've changed management since the review was left when they've been there 6 years now. Not the way to run a business 🤢
