About This Pub
Ah, The Fox and Raven – it's one of those classic country pubs that you stumble upon and think, 'This is just what I needed after a long week.' Tucked away in Chelmsford with its historic building and that inviting beer garden, it's got this warm, homely feel that makes you want to settle in for the afternoon. From the reviews, the food really shines; folks are raving about the hearty meals and pub favourites that are packed with flavour, and it's clear they've put thought into their selection of ales and wines to suit all sorts. The staff often get a big thumbs up too – stories of Amy sorting out special requests or Hannah's cheerful welcome show they're on the ball and make the experience that bit more enjoyable. But, let's be straight, it's not perfect; there are times when things drag a little, like service slowing down when it's packed, and if you're veggie, you might find the choices a tad sparse, which is a shame in such a welcoming spot. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a catch-up with friends or a family Sunday roast – just keep in mind it might not be the quickest stop if you're popping in for a quick one. I'd say give it a go; the good bits definitely outweigh the minor gripes, and you'll likely leave with a smile.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building and picturesque surroundings create a really welcoming, cosy atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxing pint or meal with mates.
-
The food is spot on – hearty pub classics and seasonal dishes that hit the spot, with plenty of praise for how tasty and hot it arrives.
-
Service can be brilliant when it's on form, with staff like Amy and Hannah going the extra mile to make you feel at home, whether it's accommodating special requests or adding a personal touch.
-
It's super dog-friendly, ideal if you're out for a walk and fancy stopping in for a drink, plus they've got a great selection of cask ales and wines to choose from.
Cons
-
Service might be a tad slow at times, especially when the place is buzzing, which could put a slight dampener on things if you're in a rush.
-
Options for vegetarians seem a bit limited, so if you're in a group with different tastes, it might not cater to everyone as well as it could.
-
The initial greeting isn't always as warm as you'd hope, based on one review, which could make the start of your visit feel a bit off.

Lovely old building. I do like to be positive, but in a word, this meal was a disappointment, I wish I could say otherwise.
The greeting was off, slow, and not very welcoming. It was difficult to make a meal choice. There was a vegetarian in the group, and they felt their options were limited. As a non vegetarian, the rest of the group also struggled.
We even discussed leaving.
The service was OK. Not the best or friendliest. Sadly, I would describe it as lazy.
Overall, the group view was that it was expensive for the standard of both the food and service.

Amy was great! She made sure we had the best time and was very accommodating when I asked to not have certain things with my food and even asked to put my J20 in a wine glass so I could feel classier. This is our second time here in 1 week and we already can't wait to come back!
Hi 👋
From the moment we walked in we were greeted with a lovely smile.
Hannah was our waitress and as usual she was wonderful, I had a drinks voucher which they tried to honour, but sadly the code did not work.
The food is always outstanding , extremely tasty and hot. We can honestly say this is the best turkey roast EVER !! Massive thanks to the Chefs, as you never get to say thank you too them.
We love the decor , the open fire on a cold day.
We can 100% recommend everything at The Fox & Raven .
Carry on the amazing work & thank you 😊
Had a lovely meal for my daughter's 19th birthday. Amy served us and she was amazing, my 8 year old drew her a picture and Amy displayed in the restaurant which my daughter's night. Food was lovely, service a little slow but it was very busy and it didn't impact our night negatively.
