The Fingerpost, York's Foundry Bridge, Norton Rd, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 5AU

About This Pub

Ah, The Fingerpost – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away by the canal in Pelsall. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the team there really know how to make you feel welcome; think friendly chats, attentive service, and that extra smile that turns a simple meal into a memorable night out. The food's a standout – those homemade dishes like the pork belly are spot on, full of flavour and presented nicely, paired with a solid range of beers and wines that keep things flowing. It's dead handy for dog walkers too, with a relaxed vibe that says 'make yourself at home.' But, let's be fair, it's not all perfect; the menu's a bit slim, so if you're in the mood for variety, you might end up sticking to the classics. And on busier days, things can get a touch messy with tables not cleared straight away, plus it's shut on Mondays, which might throw a spanner in your plans. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a bite and a bevvy – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, just book ahead to secure your spot and avoid any letdowns.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is homemade and delicious, with highlights like succulent pork belly and cheesy mushrooms that really hit the spot.
  • It's a welcoming spot for dog owners, with muddy paws and boots encouraged, perfect for a relaxed canalside vibe.
  • They've got a great selection of premium beers, ales, and wines, so there's something to suit every taste.
  • The atmosphere is spot on – bright, well-kept, and just the right mix of cosy and lively for a good catch-up with mates.
Cons
  • The menu is a bit on the small side, so if you're after a wide range of options, you might find it limiting.
  • Sometimes tables aren't cleared quickly enough, which can make the place feel a tad untidy when it's busy.
  • It's closed on Mondays, which is a shame if you're planning a mid-week pint and fancy popping in.
  • Booking ahead is essential to avoid disappointment, as it gets popular and you don't want to miss out.

Had an absolutely brilliant time here recently! The atmosphere was spot on, and the food was delicious. But what really made the visit special was our server, Sophie! She was incredibly attentive, always had a smile, and made our visit so worthwhile! The excellent service truly enhanced our experience. Would highly recommend a visit!

Drove past this place many times and on the chance we were looking for somewhere to eat, me and my friend thought we would give it a try. Inside is bright and looked after, staff are very welcoming (we were early for food but opted to stay for a drink first before we ate!) Found ourselves the beer garden and were very impressed. Ordered food come 5pm and it was excellent. Have to point out the service as well! We were well looked after by Sophie and helped us with any questions we had. Brilliant experience and will definitely be coming back in the future. Thanks!

It's funny how things turn out. I picked up the phone and with more than a touch of trepidation based on the fact that it was a mere three days away I asked of the availability of tables for mothers day. Fully booked mate, said the far-to-pleased-with-himself fellow on the other end of the phone which is how I came to be phoning instead The Fingerpost and making the same enquiry. Some context I think is required here. I'm in Bristol - the old folks live in Pelsall - and I needed proximity for those old legs. When the local failed, The Fingerpost squeezed us in and even allowed us to forego their required deposit based on our inability to pop in based as we are in the SW. We'd have to drive now but one of us not drinking was a small price to pay for not having to roast our chicken today. And then, as we enter, my father sees a starter which in his 80 something mind is somehow converted into a main course so as we're seated he's already convinced he's leaving here hungry. I'll cut to the chase. The staff here work hard. They are the epitomy of courtesy and good manners. We were asked at least twice if we needed recharges on our drinks (always a great sign in a busy restaurant since it means someone is paying attention to the important things). The food (pre-ordered) was served promptly and was really good value. Personally I had calamari, cod then chocolate mousse - the restricted mothers day menu playing slightly towards the modern but still catering for the traditionalists (parents both choosing soup, chicken and crumble). For a pub lunch it was difficult to fault but I think had there been one (a fault that is) the staff would have puts the clocks back for us so keen they were to please. A great meal and I fully recommend you give the place a go if you're in the area. And yes. My father had to eat his words, though ironically not all of his lunch, as he failed most miserably to consume the largest roast he declared he'd ever set his eyes upon.

We had a thoroughly good time here. Service was superb and friendly, very polite. Food didn’t take too long and was presented really, really well. I had the pork belly which was so succulent and flavourful along with the starter of cheesy mushrooms & garlic bread. Again, really good. Only criticism on the table was the tandoori fish burger, not bad but the person eating it thought it would have been more full of tandoori flavours. Overall, really lovely. Reasonably priced, welcoming of people and dogs alike and just a great place to grab a lunch or dinner by the canal.

Came across this place while waiting for my dog to be groomed elsewhere. Walked in and didn't see a member of staff, walked round to find a table was a few tables not cleaned yet from the last diners. Sat down checked the menu out was disappointed it was quite a small menu limited choice. The food came the breaded halloumi was delicious. The battered fish was okayish, the batter was nice the fish was bland. It was okay wasn't terrible wasn't the best. I would return to try the dinner menu. When leaving I went to the bar to pay and again was nobody there. There was a chap at the bar who had to text/call someone to come & let us pay.
