About This Pub

Ah, The Engineers Arms – it's one of those classic pubs that you stumble upon in Coalville and think, 'This could be a regular haunt.' From what I've gathered chatting about it, the place really shines with its friendly crowd and staff who make you feel like you're among mates straight away. It's spot on for sports fans too, with screens everywhere so you can cheer on the team without missing a beat, and there's always something going on like a darts game or a bit of dancing to liven up the evening. Plus, being inexpensive means you can pop in for a pint or two without worrying about the wallet. On the flip side, though, it's not all rosy – the toilets are a common complaint, often in a state that's less than inviting, which can spoil an otherwise good visit. And there have been times when the music's cranked up so loud it disrupts the sports viewing, leading to a few folks heading elsewhere. What's more, it seems the management isn't always keen on backing local events, like Pride, which might make you pause if you're looking for a place that fully embraces the community. Overall, it's a decent spot for a casual get-together, but it'd be even better with a few tweaks to sort out those rough edges – worth a try if you're in the area, just keep your expectations balanced!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff and locals are incredibly friendly, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's a brilliant spot for catching sports, with multiple screens dotted around so you won't miss a moment.
  • The atmosphere is lively and fun, with things like darts matches and even a dance now and then to keep the energy up.
  • Prices are nice and affordable, ideal for a relaxed pint without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • The toilets can be a real letdown, often flooded and not as clean as you'd hope, which puts a damper on things.
  • Loud music sometimes gets in the way of watching the footie or other sports, leading to a bit of frustration.
  • The management doesn't always show much support for local community events, like Pride, which might leave some feeling underwhelmed.

Despite Pride in Coalville taking place just around the corner, the management at The Engineers Arms made it clear they would not support or even advertise the event—unless it directly benefits their profits. Genuine allyship means standing with the community, not picking and choosing based on what brings in money. After I expressed my concerns and requested contact details for her manager, the pub’s manager blocked me instead of engaging in a respectful conversation. This kind of response is not only unprofessional, but shows a complete unwillingness to be held accountable. This attitude does not reflect the values we should expect from any community-focused business.

Love this pub. Staff and locals are friendly and there's always something going on, whether a darts match or sports on the tv. Even a female ruck now and again. 🤣 But laughing aside. It would be nice if the toilets weren't always flooded and a but cleaner and that's the only reason for a 4 star review!!

Great pub with screens all around the pub for showing sports. Sadly, the male of the pub has started playing loud music while trying to watch the football on Sunday afternoons, which resulted in a loss of several customers today. My question is, is this supposed to be a sports bar??

First time in and super impressed. Super clean and neat, toilets immaculate, staff super friendly and helpful and when we asked about watching ladies football put it on across multiple screens with the volume up. It made our afternoon. Definately planning another visit soon. Keep up the great customer service, you've got a few new regulars, see you soon for the ladies football, rugby and more xx❤️⚽🏉🎾 The above was my first review which I gave 5 stars but since I had 2 visits where my experience was appalling. On New Years Eve my friend and I attended for the night .The staff were nice but the owners were rude a number of times. My friend received a urgent call from her mum and needed to go outside 1 hr before closing to hear .The security said he would let her back in then locked all the doors on her. I approached the bar staff and the owner/manager and he told me she was out so tough. She had her coat, possessions and drink inside ,but he refused to let her in .In the end I approached the bar staff and security and after 15 mins they let her in to get her belongings totally spoiled the night. So much for the season of goodwill .incredibly rude and out of order !!!! I gave them the benefit of the doubt and visited with my mum in January .As ladies football fans we had visited before and the staff had been very obliging however on this occassion complete rudeness. I asked politely at the bar if maybe we could have 1 screen of the 6 on for the Arsenal ladies match. I was told by the lady owner she would be over in a few minutes to come and put it on .We bought a drink and sat down excited to see the match .Twenty mins later still no-one ,so my 78 year old mum went back to the bar to ask and was told maybe she would see .After this we left and went to another pub who were friendly and obliging. The bar wasn't full and there was no need for this attitude we would have been in one corner with 5 other screens available. Clearly this bar is not a sports bar at all or respectful of people's choices or supportive of all sports. Women's football is now popular and I personally would have frequented with others and brought custom to the bar with every match I couldn't personally go to see .In these tough times surely everyone 's custom should be appreciated and people made welcome .By my last two experiences the owners have no politeness or customer service knowledge or skills unless you're in the click of old regulars. My Advice-Just remember future customers are always new ones at some point and their money pays your wages and keeps your business open. Politeness and good service goes a long way and in future I will support somewhere that treats me with respect and like a human being🤬🤬🤬😤😤😤
