About This Pub
Ah, The Duke Wanstead – it's one of those local gems that really pulls you in with its friendly vibe and all the little touches that make a pub feel special. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute stars, always up for a chat and making sure you're looked after, which is just what you want after a long day. The food's a highlight too; they've got these seasonal menus and deals that keep things fresh and exciting, like the Monday burger night or Thursday steak specials – perfect for grabbing a bite without breaking the bank. And let's not forget the events; live music and DJ sessions add a nice buzz, especially on those quieter evenings. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few grumbles about value for money, particularly with the Sunday roast – it sounds lovely, but apparently the portions don't quite match the price tag, which might leave you a bit peckish. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed get-together with friends, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe plan for a busier night by booking ahead. You'd probably enjoy it if you're after that classic pub feel in Wanstead, but it's not the place for anything too wild or extravagant.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates.
-
The food is spot on, with tasty specials like seasonal menus, burger deals, and Sunday roasts that hit the spot.
-
It's got a relaxed and cosy atmosphere, ideal for a laid-back evening or a cheeky pint in a quiet neighbourhood spot.
-
Loads of fun events like live music on the first Sunday of the month and DJ nights keep things lively and engaging.
-
Plenty of drink offers, such as the Monday Club with £5 pints, make it wallet-friendly for a mid-week treat.
Cons
-
Some dishes, like the Sunday roast, can feel a tad pricey for what you get, with portions that might leave you wanting more.
-
It does get busy on popular nights, so you might need to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
-
The vibe might not always suit everyone – it's more relaxed than rowdy, so if you're after a high-energy night, it could fall a bit flat.

We are new to the area, so only popped in because it was the most convenient place to get a drink. As it was, it was so nice and the food was so tempting, we ended up having lunch there - and it was lovely. We sat outside, so I can't give any insight on the atmosphere inside, but where we were was great. The food was really good and good value, plus the person serving us excellent and very welcoming too. I'd recommend a trip to the Duke.
Lovely pub which improves if you go at the time it suits your requirements.
Food is good. Fair range of Ales including a couple of local breweries.
Not over priced, not pretensious but feels like it's more than your average Wanstead pub.
Very friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and nuanced music which is not obtrusive.
It's a lovely pub, hidden in a quiet neighbourhood. The staff couldn't be nicer. Alas, in my opinion the sunday roast is quite expensive for such a small portion.
Good food nice atmosphere friendly staff
Really enjoyed the Christmas special menu at Dukes. Fantastic food, great flavour combinations and a lovely team who did a brilliant job even though an incredibly busy pre-Christmas Friday night. Well done to the kitchen team especially for such amazing food, thank you.
