About This Pub

Ah, the Bull at Wanstead – it's one of those neighbourhood gems that really pulls you in with its friendly vibe and community spirit, just a stone's throw from the Tube. I've got to say, the Sunday roasts are an absolute highlight; they're packed with flavour, and little touches like free drinks for dads make it feel extra special. The beer garden is a winner too, especially on a warm day – it's a proper suntrap with parasols for shade, and it's open late, so you can unwind properly. Plus, it's brilliant for families and dog owners, with a kids' menu and doggy treats that make it inclusive for all. The staff are usually spot on, going out of their way for events and parties, which adds to that homely feel. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – some drinks like the wine can be a bit lacklustre and overpriced, and there have been moans about certain dishes not quite landing, like that dodgy crispy squid. Service might lag when it's heaving, and the toilets definitely need a bit more attention to keep things fresh. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint or a meal with mates, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe skip the iffy bits on the menu.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Sunday roasts are spot on – tasty, hearty, and a real treat, especially with those thoughtful extras like free drinks on Father's Day.
  • It's a welcoming spot with a fantastic beer garden that's a proper suntrap, perfect for relaxing with friends on a sunny evening.
  • They're super family and dog-friendly, with a kids' menu, colouring pencils, and even doggy roasts and beds – makes everyone feel right at home.
  • The staff are generally brilliant, offering great service and going the extra mile, like helping with events or being attentive during parties.
  • Being part of the community, it's got a warm, inviting atmosphere that's ideal for locals or first-timers, and it's conveniently close to Wanstead Tube.
Cons
  • Some menu items fall short, like the wine selection which can be disappointing and overpriced, or that crispy squid which didn't impress at all.
  • Pricing across the board feels a bit steep, which might put off those looking for a more budget-friendly night out.
  • Service can get stretched during busy times, leaving staff rushed off their feet and potentially slowing things down.
  • The toilets could do with more regular cleaning and care to keep everything up to scratch.
  • A few reviews mentioned inconsistencies with the menu, so it might not always hit the mark for everyone.

Amazing Sunday Roast & Lovely Father’s Day Touch! We came for the Sunday Roast at The Bull and it was absolutely spot on — tasty, hearty, and satisfying as always. It was Father’s Day, and all dads got a free drink on the house, which was such a thoughtful touch! Great food, great service, and a great atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back!

The wine is terrible. I tried all 4 of the new red wines and they pretty much all tasted the same. Disappointing. Can only hope the new George has a better offer. Crispy squid was VILE. Not sure what’s happened to the menu here. Pricing across the board expensive. Staff remain fantastic! They really make the place. Just updating to say I tried the roast! June 2025 It was lovely. Except the potatoes. They need to be cooked properly. Hard on the inside. Everything else was nice. But what made it great was Allena. Always so attentive!

Went for a friend's birthday, had the room upstairs. Very nice evening. Toilets definitely need better carr and regular cleaning is most definitely needed. The poor girl behind the bar definitely needed one other person to help her. She did a great job but was rushed off her feet. So made serivce at the bar slower.

We booked the upstairs room for my daughter’s baptism afterparty and everybody had a fabulous time! Paul even came in early in the morning to allow me to set up and helped with moving furniture. All of our guests remarked on the quality of the food and our barman was so kind and attentive. I 100% recommend using their function room for parties, it’s a great space.

We had a fantastic Sunday roast lunch for six people, including two children, and couldn’t be happier with our experience. The Sunday roast was absolutely delicious—perfectly cooked meats, crispy potatoes, and all the classic trimmings. The best part? The two-course offer for just £23, which was incredible value for the quality and portion sizes. A big thank you to our waitress, Alina, who took such great care of us. She was friendly, attentive, and made our meal even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this spot for a hearty, affordable Sunday roast.
