About This Pub

Ah, The Compasses – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, you know? Tucked away in Abbots Langley, it's been family-run for over 40 years, which gives it that genuine, heartfelt touch. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food's a standout – think seasonal specials and those mouthwatering Sunday roasts that everyone raves about, paired with a solid selection of beers and cocktails to wash it all down. The beer garden's a treat on a sunny day, and with covered seating, you're sorted even if the weather turns. It's got that community spirit too, with quiz nights that sound like a laugh, and being dog-friendly means you can bring the whole gang. On the flip side, though, there are a couple of older gripes about dodgy service and iffy food on occasion, so it might not be perfect every visit – but hey, that's pubs for you. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're in the area, especially near the Harry Potter Studios, and with an average rating pushing 4.2, I'd say it's worth giving it a go for a proper, no-fuss night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, with seasonal menus and delicious Sunday roasts that keep things fresh and exciting – perfect for a proper pub grub fix.
  • It's got a lovely beer garden and covered seating, making it ideal for enjoying a pint whether the sun's out or it's a bit drizzly.
  • Friendly staff and a welcoming vibe make you feel right at home, plus it's dog-friendly, which is great if you're popping in with your furry mate.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from real ales to cocktails, and don't forget the quiz night on Wednesdays for a fun evening with friends.
  • Handy location near the Harry Potter Studios, so it's a brilliant spot to unwind after a day of wizardry.
Cons
  • There have been a few complaints about inconsistent service and food quality in the past, like one review mentioning stale dishes and a rather abrupt manager – not the norm, but worth noting.
  • It might get a bit quiet on some evenings, as one person mentioned, so if you're after a buzzing atmosphere every time, it could fall short.
  • The operating hours seem a tad variable based on what's listed, which might catch you out if you're planning a late visit.

Top notch pub, this one. 🔥 Food’s fresh as anything and the beer’s lovely and cold - just what you want on a proper spring day. Bit of sunshine in the beer garden, chilling on the outdoor decking with a pint in hand - can’t beat it. Great spot for a natter with your mates and not a care in the world. No bells and whistles, just a good old British boozer doing it right. Spot on!

Friendly staff and engaging locals, good food and dog friendly. If you're going to The Harry Potter Studios tour and are a bit early I heartily recommend it. Also they do pie of the day! And whilst I didn't have it today anywhere that has a POTD is a win in my book.

Had an awesome meal today! The cheeseburger was spot on. Super fresh, juicy, and packed with flavour. The chips were insanely good, so crispy, probably some of the best I’ve ever had. Washed it down with an alcohol-free beer, which was such a nice touch to have. The staff were super friendly and made the whole vibe even better. Highly recommend!

Road trip from the South West to Watford. Stopped here for a roast dinner, hadn't booked anything. Beef was a bit overdone but I think that was because it was the last of it. Everything else was tasty and good value. staff were very friendly

The worst pub food and service I have ever encountered. The fish stinks with stale oil. Vegetables definitely gone off. Chips looked like somebody's left over. The burly manager threw my money at me and menacingly told me to get out of his pub just for drawing the attention of the waitress to the poor state of the food. I wonder how this pub got their good reviews. I would have rated this place lower than zero if Google had allowed such number. Tired interior. Tired staff and very low quality food. I will never visit here under the present circumstances
