About This Pub
Ah, The Commercial Hotel – it's one of those places that really captures the heart of a traditional Scottish pub, all wrapped up in a hotel package. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff are just top-notch; they're warm, attentive, and make you feel like you're catching up with old mates rather than just another face in the crowd. The food deals are an absolute winner too – think hearty breakfasts, express lunches, and Sunday roasts that won't empty your wallet, plus it's a ace spot for dog owners to relax with their pups in the bar. And don't forget the fun side: free events like Bingo-oke and showing all the major sports make it a lively hub for a good time. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing if you're planning to stay over. A few people have had a tough time with the noise from the pub bleeding into the rooms, especially late at night, which can turn a peaceful stay into a bit of a nightmare – no air con or proper soundproofing doesn't help matters. Still, if you're just popping in for a drink or a meal, it's a solid choice that balances that classic pub charm with some modern perks. All in all, I'd say give it a go if you're in Wishaw, but maybe check for a quieter room if you're staying the night.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a chat, which really makes you feel at home.
-
They've got some cracking food deals, like breakfast from just £4 or two fish and chips for £19 on Fridays – perfect for a budget-friendly bite.
-
It's dog-friendly in the bar and beer garden, so you can pop in with your furry mate for a drink or a meal, as long as they're well-behaved.
-
Free function room hire is a brilliant touch for parties or gatherings, making it easy to host without breaking the bank.
-
The pub has a lively atmosphere with events like Bingo-oke on Fridays, and they show all the big sports matches, so it's great for a fun night out.
Cons
-
The rooms can be really noisy at night because of the pub downstairs, with music and crowds making it hard to get a good kip, especially in certain rooms.
-
There's no air conditioning or fans, which might leave you sweltering on warmer days, and the soundproofing isn't up to scratch.
-
Some folks have mentioned issues like faulty fans in the bathroom or plugs in awkward spots, which can make the stay a bit frustrating.
-
While the food and service are spot on, the overall hotel experience doesn't always live up to expectations for a place that's meant to be a relaxing stay.

Utterly intolerable. This is not a 3 star hotel, it is a 1 star hotel. No A/C. No fans. No sound proofing. Your choice is to open the window onto the street and hope that it cools the room, but you get to deal with backward-thinking, lung-rotting smokers from last century and idiot-level blather all night long, or you get to bake in your own sweat in a hot room and still listen to blather through the windows. There's no phone to reach the front desk for anything. No point in staying in this hotel in any season and not sufficient for even a 1-night stay. "Breakfast" doesn't open until 10am. This is called "lunch."
Went for breakfast with my pal. Breakfast portions are a good size. Free refills of coffee and tea. Staff are friendly. Nicely set out away from bar area.
Room was clean. The fan in the bathroom did not work. We had room number 7 which was too noisy at night. There was a pub/club nearby which was noisy and we could not sleep till late night. They provided the hair dryer but there was no plug next to the mirror or in the bathroom.
The rooms were clean and staff was very friendly. But it was very noisy at night due to the DJ playing in the bar downstairs without any noise cancelling in the building. Whole furniture and walls were vibrating. Kudos to the DJ and music system though.
(They didn't mention this DJ Info in the booking description).
My husband and I had an overnight stay at The Commercial Hotel and would definitely recommend it.
There is a spacious car park at the rear of the hotel.
Very friendly staff at check in (sorry can't remember the ladies name who checked us in & also served us at dinner and breakfast).
I was lucky enough to get one of the first two rooms downstairs with a balcony. The room itself was spotless. There were plenty of tea's and coffees available with complimentary biscuits, it was a nice touch.
After settling in the room we went down to the bar for food, the steak and sausage pie is delicious I would definitely recommend trying it.
Later that night after returning from a birthday party the nightclub was in full swing, you couldn't hear anything from the downstairs room but if you walked up to the top floor you could hear the music blaring. For those looking for a quieter stay I recommend asking for the lower floor rooms.
The only criticism I can add is that I had trouble connecting to the WiFi in the room but in fairness that didn't really bother me.
I do have to say though after having a delicious meal at dinner time I was very disappointed with the breakfast. The Scottish breakfast came out with scrambled egg which was disgusting and tasted burnt, the sausage wasn't that great either, the only nice thing's on the plate were the black pudding and potato scone.
We would definitely love to return for a visit even if it is only to have the steak pie.
