About This Pub

Ah, The Cock in Henbury – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away on the outskirts of Macclesfield. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this warm, inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed get-together with mates or family. The food really stands out; folks are raving about the home-cooked dishes, like that amazing steak and ale pie or the chicken pie that's packed with goodness – it's straightforward, tasty grub that'll leave you satisfied without breaking the bank. And let's not forget the staff; they're described as incredibly friendly and helpful, which makes all the difference when you're settling in for a pint or a meal. The beer garden sounds like a winner too, especially on a sunny day, with space to unwind and even bring your dog along. On the flip side, it's a bit gutting that it's closed at the moment, so you might have to hold off on that visit. Plus, there was that one review where the food didn't quite live up to expectations – a burnt toastie isn't ideal, is it? And with no fresh feedback lately, it does make you wonder if it's as lively as before. Overall, though, with a solid 4.5 rating from heaps of happy visitors, I'd say it's worth checking out once it's back up and running; just go in with an open mind and enjoy the good bits!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty home-cooked meals like steak and ale pie that's full of flavour, with perfectly crispy chips and fresh veg; it's a real treat for a casual meal out.
  • The staff are brilliant, always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in; they've got that personal touch that makes a visit memorable.
  • It's a family-friendly spot with a lovely beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun, plus it's dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for the day.
  • Free parking and great walks nearby make it an ideal stop after a countryside ramble, and the atmosphere is warm and relaxed, just what you'd want from a traditional country pub.
  • They serve excellent beers, like a top-notch pint of Unicorn, which regulars rave about as one of the best in the area.
Cons
  • It's currently closed, which is a bit of a shame as it means you can't pop in right now, but hopefully it'll be back soon.
  • There was one mention of food not quite hitting the mark, like a disappointing BLT toastie with burnt bread, so it might not be perfect every time.
  • With no recent reviews in the last six months, it feels like things have gone a bit quiet, which could mean it's not as buzzing as it used to be.

Went for dinner a couple of weeks ago to check it out after reopening and was blown away! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming and helpful in every way, the food was amazing and the whole atmosphere of the place was simply a vibe. As a pescatarian, there were numerous options on both the menu and the specials boards (yes, plural, there are 2) - I definitely recommend the vegetarian burger with halloumi, I can’t remember ever having a veggie burger that even compares. As for the fish and chips, my dad said (and I quote) that it was the best pub fish and chips he has ever had (and he’s had quite a few in his lifetime haha). In terms of food allergies, the staff were incredibly helpful and attentive (as they should be for these things), a manager took my order separately, which was prepared in a separate section of the kitchen, and then brought it to the table separately also. I was even given double-sanitised cutlery just to be on the safe side, something I have never encountered anywhere else. So overall an incredible experience, 100% recommend and will definitely be back soon.

Fantastic food, it has been a pleasure to eat here & the friendly landlord Julian & the staff made us very welcome. The steak & ale pie is amazing, the chips perfectly cooked, crispy outer & the mash & steamed veg. The chicken pie slice was full of chicken, both pies had really nice pastry & both meals were hot. The pub interior is still how a pub used to be, with a taproom one side & a lounge dining area on the other side. We highly recommend this pub & will definitely visit again. Prices are very reasonable & a varied menu. Thank you, we enjoyed ourselves

I really wanted to love this place & the food. The staff were ever so polite, kind & friendly, they could not be at fault, we experienced fantastic customer service. However the food did disappoint, we ordered what was meant to be a BLT toastie which was turned over/hidden burnt bread that could not be bitten into, a small portion of fish & chips & a confusingly tasting chicken burger. We will most definitely be back to try again on a different day. Thank you for the hospitality, the atmosphere of the pub including the interiors was lovely, the food just let us down.
