About This Pub

Ah, The Castle – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away on Church Street in Macclesfield. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this real charm about it, being a historic old building full of character, with stone floors and exposed bricks that make you feel like you're stepping back in time. The food's a real highlight; folks are raving about the Sunday roasts done in a tapas style, and there are weekly specials that cater brilliantly to vegans and coeliacs, all made from scratch with local ingredients. Pair that with an impressive range of cask beers and you're in for a treat. The staff sound incredibly welcoming, and little touches like board games and being dog-friendly add to the homely feel. On the flip side, it's a walk-in only sort of place, so if you're planning a big get-together, you might have to cross your fingers it's not too busy. And honestly, the online presence is a tad underwhelming – just a Facebook page that didn't load properly for me – but that hasn't stopped it from earning a whopping 4.8 rating from heaps of happy visitors. All in all, if you're after a relaxed pint, a hearty meal, and good company, I'd say give The Castle a go; it's got that perfect mix of tradition and top-quality grub that makes for a memorable night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot-on – think delicious tapas-style Sunday roasts, bar snacks like curried pork pie, and plenty of options for vegans and those with coeliac disease, all made from locally sourced ingredients.
  • It's got this wonderfully cosy, historic vibe in a Grade II listed building, with old wood, stone walls, and even an open fire that makes you feel right at home.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of cask and keg beers from smaller independent breweries, plus it's dog-friendly, which is always a bonus for us animal lovers.
  • There are loads of board games to keep things fun, and the atmosphere is just brilliant, with friendly staff and a welcoming crowd.
Cons
  • You can't make reservations, so it might be a bit of a gamble turning up with a larger group, though it seems to work out fine for smaller ones.
  • The website's a bit of a letdown – it's just a Facebook page and we couldn't access much, which might make it harder to check out the menu or events in advance.

Great tapas style Sunday roast in the cosiest of pubs. They adapt the menu weekly and serve great veg. Lots of board games to play. Really great food for vegans and celiacs. Can’t make reservations but has always been ok turning up in a small group

Called in The Castle yesterday to an amazing welcome, we tried the bar snacks, curried pork pie, and we were not disappointed, it was absolutely delicious, we will be calling again very soon to try the food as the menu looks amazing.

Stunning Grade II listed building with fab staff serving superb cask beers. The interior is gorgeous. Look especially at the room on the left and the one on the right beyond the bar, and sample the atmosphere in the tiny vault with its open fire.

Amazing locally sourced food made from scratch in house including small plates, snacks , weekly specials and Sunday roasts, constant rotation of interesting casks and keg beers. Food and drink from smaller independent breweries and distilleries, brilliant atmosphere and clientele, dog friendly. Lovely staff and inspiring owner, best pub in Macclesfield! 🏰🍺🍴

This was a trip down memory lane for me, as this was a pub I used to visit regularly many years ago when I lived in Macc. It's a very old pub, so full of character and stories to tell. Old wood, stone walls, stone flag stones, fireplaces and exposed bricks the place just wreaks of age and history, and holds the essence of endless good times. It will not disappoint. Food served but we just had drinks.
