About This Pub

Ah, The Cape of Good Hope – it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this wonderful mix of vintage character and modern touches, like colourful wood panelling and plush seating that make you want to linger. The staff really stand out; they're super attentive and go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, which is always a winner when you're out for a pint or a meal. The food menu is packed with tempting options, from hearty sharing plates to excellent brunch choices, and paired with a solid selection of beers and drinks, it's easy to see why people rave about it. That beer garden out the back is a real gem too, especially on a nice day – it's spacious and inviting, perfect for soaking up the sun with friends. On the flip side, if sports aren't your thing, the TVs showing matches might not be everyone's cup of tea, and with moderate prices, it could add up if you're planning a big night out. Still, overall, it's a solid spot for a laid-back evening or a family dinner, and being near some of Oxford's highlights makes it even more appealing. I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – you might just find yourself making it a regular haunt!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is spot on – think tasty sharing plates like beef chips and spicy cauliflower, plus a great brunch selection that's full of flavour.
  • They've got a fantastic range of drinks, including rotating craft beers and seasonal options that keep things exciting.
  • The atmosphere is lively and homely, with quirky seating, colourful decor, and a spacious beer garden that's perfect for catching up with mates on a sunny day.
  • It's conveniently located near Oxford's Botanic Garden and other spots, making it easy to pop in after exploring.
Cons
  • If you're not a fan of sports on the telly, it might feel a bit overwhelming at times, as it's a key part of the vibe.
  • Being moderately priced, it could stretch the budget for a quick pint if you're after something more wallet-friendly.
  • The location just outside the city centre means it's not the most central, so you might need to plan a bit of a walk or a short taxi ride.

Very friendly greeting from young lady behind the bar. Lunchtime sharing beef chips and spicy cauliflowers excellent. Has a lovely outback area being enjoyed by many. Would love this to be our local, sadly only visiting.

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at The Cape of Good Hope, and a huge part of that was thanks to Cassie! From the moment I walked in, she made me feel incredibly welcome with her warm smile and friendly energy. Her attentiveness and professionalism were truly exceptional—she effortlessly balanced efficiency with genuine hospitality, making sure every guest felt valued. Cassie went above and beyond to ensure our visit was perfect, offering great recommendations and making sure our drinks were always topped up without us even needing to ask. Her knowledge of the menu and ability to handle a busy service with ease was seriously impressive. It’s rare to come across someone so naturally skilled in customer service, and she is a real credit to the pub. If you’re looking for a great atmosphere, top-notch drinks, and service that makes you want to come back time and time again, The Cape of Good Hope is the place to be—especially if you’re lucky enough to be served by Cassie! 10/10 experience, and I’ll definitely be returning.

Interesting pub. It has a lot of sports on the tv. That’s not my thing. However the seating is quirky and the outside bit at the back good. It has the vibe of an upmarket spoons. The beer choice excellent. Menu great choices and good quality. Brunch excellent although we missed bottomless one.
