About This Pub
Ah, The Black Swan – it's one of those timeless spots in York that just oozes character, tucked away near the River Foss with its half-timbered walls and cosy nooks. I really appreciate the authentic pub atmosphere, complete with wood-panelled rooms and an open fireplace that makes you want to settle in for the evening. The drinks selection is spot on, offering a range of premium ales at fair prices, and the staff are generally brilliant, making you feel right at home with their approachable manner. If the weather plays ball, the beer gardens are a absolute delight for a bit of outdoor relaxation. On the downside, though, the food menu can feel a tad sparse and unreliable, with some items missing or dishes like Sunday roasts not quite hitting the mark, which has left a few folks underwhelmed. There are also mentions of tidiness issues, such as grubby menus or musty toilets, that might put a damper on things. All in all, it's a cracking place for a pint and a catch-up with mates, but if you're after a flawless meal, you might want to keep your expectations in check – still, the history and charm make it worth a visit.

Great atmosphere, this pub supposedly is the oldest in York, older than the Old Starre Inne, but aside from that, not much else. The food was good, but they were missing way too many items on the menu and the choices unfortunately were quite limited.
A really nice pub with a great classic pub atmosphere. There are lots of drinks to choose from at a good rate and the staff are super friendly.
Toilets smelt like damp, menus were covered in food, they made us pay in advance then bought the worst Sunday dinner out that I’ve ever had. Asked to order desserts and no one ever came. Very disappointed, took my money then didn’t give a toss!
Popped in for a pint after queuing for the Ghost Merchants. Has been kept lovely and traditional by the bar, original fireplace etc! Bar staff were lovely (even if they did roast me for letting my partner pay 🤣 Couldn't comment on the food but seeing some people's plates, it did look really good. Really nice port in the storm pub, highly recommend.
I can't say enough good things about this place. I wanted to visit an historic pub while in York and Andy and Jim with 'eBike Tours in York City' recommended it as an establishment that would satisfy my wish. I went in and could feel the souls of the drinkers before me. Such charm and history packed into this building. The gentleman behind the bar was patient as we asked questions on his drink options. He recommended my son take a sip of the cider before ordering so we didn't pay for something we wouldn't like. This is a high integrity move on behalf of the that shows he's playing the long game. I highly recommend this pub. You will not be disappointed if you want to visit a pub that will take you back in time.
