About This Pub

Ah, The Black Swan – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local spot, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this warm, old-school vibe that's becoming a bit rare these days, with friendly staff who always seem up for a chat and a decent pint of beer to enjoy. I love how they've kept things traditional, with options to watch sports, play a round of pool or darts, and even catch some live music if you're lucky. It's smack in the centre of Abingdon, making it super easy to nip in after a wander around town. On the other hand, it can get a tad boisterous at times, with some folks being a bit too lively, and it's a shame they don't serve any food, so you might need to plan ahead for that. Still, if you're after a straightforward, no-fuss night out with mates, it's worth a go – just keep in mind it might not be everyone's cup of tea if you prefer something a bit more relaxed.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in
  • It's got that classic old-fashioned pub charm, which is a real treat in today's world of fancy bars
  • A solid selection of beers on tap, even if they're not the trendiest ones, and it's perfect for enjoying a pint
  • Loads of fun things to do, like playing pool, darts, or catching the latest footy or F1 match on the telly
  • They host live music events, which add a lively buzz, and it's conveniently located in the town centre with nearby parking
Cons
  • It can get a bit rowdy with some loud customers, which might put off those after a quieter evening
  • No food on offer, so you'll have to pop elsewhere if you're after a bite to eat
  • The pool table could do with a bit of fixing up, as it might not be perfectly level
  • There have been mentions of the odd uncomfortable moment, like feeling out of place or concerns about the crowd

I'm new to Abingdon and the black swan seems to have a 'reputation'. But I cannot fault it in any sense. The beers good, and the staff are friendly. It's an old fashioned boozer in my eyes, which is a dying breed in the pub industry. They have a pool table (which may need re-leveling but it serves as good fun) and a dart board as well as plenty of TV's if you're inclined to watch sports. I can't comment on the food as I've not eaten at the pub.

Great sports pub in the centre. Very clean, open until 1-ish on Fri/Sat night, can watch football/F1, has pool, darts, jukebox, owner is a good lad. Doesn't have the hipster ales but who cares.

They don't do food, but they have live music events, great staff, a decent pool table, and a smile for you too 😀 Park in the nearby multi- story car park and it's a short walk.

My husband and myself have been running this pub for the last 5yrs.we have a 5* rating for our kitchen and our customers are very friendly and welcoming. Obviously like any pub you may get a rogue customer who isn't a local, but we become aware of them pretty quickly. All the bad reviews are coming from a digruntled customer who the police are aware of. Please do not be taken in by his rantings. Thank you.

I rarely comment on these things but i feel the need to warn people what a terrible place this is. I went in with my son for a coffee and sandwich. The customers were loud, raucous and rude. I felt like I was a exhibit in a zoo. My son is 19 and there was obviously minors drinking. To be fair the food was edible but no better than Greggs in town. The table we were at was sticky, the glass my son had, had lipstick stains. I felt uncomfortable the whole time I was there, and was pleased to leave. It used to be a lovely place so friendly and welcoming, I wish I had listened to other people when they said it was nothing more than a dregs watering hole. I gave it a chance, but never again the slobs, old tarts and alcohol filled men are welcome to the seedy place. Not the place for anyone who has standards beyond the gutter.
