About This Pub

Ah, The Black Lion – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a reliable old friend in the heart of London. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the beer; they've got an impressive lineup of real ales and other tipples that have put them on the map with CAMRA and all. The atmosphere is spot on too – think friendly chats, a cozy spot to watch the footie, and that beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun or sheltering from a drizzle. It's dead handy being so close to Plaistow tube, making it a go-to for a quick pint after work or before heading to the Excel or Stratford. On the flip side, it might not always be jumping; some have mentioned it's a bit on the quiet side mid-week, which could be a downside if you're after non-stop energy. And while the food's hearty and homemade, it's your standard pub fare, so if you're in the mood for something fancy, you might want to look elsewhere. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening – I'd say give it a try if you're in the area; you'll likely leave with a smile and maybe a new favourite spot.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a great range of real ales that have earned them spots in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide – perfect for anyone who appreciates a proper pint.
  • It's got such a warm and friendly atmosphere, making it easy to feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or settling in for the match with mates.
  • The beer garden is a lovely spot, especially on a sunny day, with plenty of outdoor seating and even some covered areas for when the weather turns.
  • They're brilliant for sports fans, with a wide selection of events on TV in a relaxed setting, plus a function room that's ideal for birthdays or get-togethers.
  • Location-wise, it's super convenient – just a short walk from Plaistow tube station and near some great spots like the Excel Centre, making it easy to drop by after work or an event.
  • The homemade pub food sounds delicious, made with fresh ingredients, and they've got a car park for added convenience when you're driving over.
Cons
  • It can be a bit quiet during the week, like on a Wednesday afternoon, so if you're after a lively buzz every time, you might find it a tad subdued at off-peak hours.
  • The food menu is more your classic pub grub, which is great if that's what you're in the mood for, but it might not satisfy if you're looking for something more adventurous or upscale.
  • Parking is only available while the pub's open and it's locked up afterwards, so plan ahead if you're relying on that – and spaces might be limited on busier days.

My very first day in London, and this was the first pub I’d ventured into. It was everything I was excited to experience. Such a wonderful atmosphere, and of course, delicious beer! I felt at home, and everyone there was so friendly and inviting. I was lucky enough to be there, on my birthday, and during a huge football match at that. What could be better? Make it a point to stop in and have a round, or a few 😁🍺. All I can say otherwise is thank you to everyone there for making such a wonderful memory for me. I can’t tell you how quickly I want to visit London again, if even just to put back a few rounds with the crowd at this wonderful gem of a pub! Cheers, and have a Captain Bob for me!

Good pub about five minutes walk from Plaistow Underground Station. Two cask beers on handpump when I visited. Lots of outdoor seating in the beer garden to the rear some of it covered. Very quiet on the Wednesday afternoon that I called in. A few people watching horse racing on the televisions in the main bar. There is a smaller bar with a separate door at the rear.

One of my favourite pubs in all of London - to have it as my local is a gift from the gods. It’s a proper pub.

🚇 Plaistow 🍺 £5.80 Cruzcampo A Legendary Plaistow Boozer. The Black Lion is located in the heart of Plaistow E13. The nearest Tube is Plaistow, it’s a five minute walk to get here. This historic pub was originally built over 600 years ago. It was rebuilt in 1747 and remodelled again in 1875. Regular visitors in the 1960's were the West Ham team, including world cup trio of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst. There is also a connection to Dick Turpin who stabled Black Bess in the stables here. This is a classic two bar oldschool pub that oozes old world charm. The bar on the right is split level and has Tudor beams and original exposed brickwork walls. The servery is a longun’ and stretches down the length of the bar. The seating is a mix of long velour upholstered benches with matching stools around circular tables. The smaller back bar is accessible by a separate door or through the end of the main bar. This bar is a cosier affair with a red carpet and comfy banquettes. In both bars is some superb memorabilia, you’ll find a photo of Bobby Moore, Warren Mitchell and Kenny Lynch propping up the bar here. There is also a picture of Canning Town born Terry Spinks who was the youngest Olympic gold medallist in British boxing history. The beer line up will please most, there is a good choice of mainstream beers with two cask ales. I decided on a pint of Cruzcampo, my pint was excellent, price point was average. There is a classic home cooked pub food menu available, Fish & Chips costs £13.00. There is also a seafood stall in the carpark next to the pub, I had some peeled prawns with plenty of pepper and vinegar for £4. We arrived bang on opening time at 12pm on mild Friday lunchtime in February. I was with die hard @westham fan and fellow pub enthusiast @scottyboy who knows a thing or two about pubs around this manor. As you can imagine the pub was quiet as we were the first ones in. There are a few screens dotted around the pub which had Sky Sports on in the background. The service was great, the barman was welcoming and was happy for me to take a few photos. This is a legendary pub which is steeped in folklore, history and is a favourite amongst the West Ham faithful. I absolutely loved visiting this pub, this is a proper London pub experience. If there was ever a reason to head out east, then visiting The Black Lion is definitely one of them. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 23.02.24
