About This Pub
Ah, The Abbey Arms – it's one of those classic London pubs that just draws you in with its warm, homely feel. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute gems; they're always ready with a smile and a good yarn, making every visit feel like catching up with old friends. The beers are spot on too, especially that Guinness which gets rave reviews – it's smooth and just right for settling in for the evening. Plus, it's got that traditional charm with darts and sports on the screens, ideal for a relaxed night out. On the flip side, it's cash only, which might catch you off guard if you're used to tapping your card, and there's not much in the way of food; you can bring your own or just stick to crisps, so plan ahead if you're peckish. The atmosphere is lovely when it's buzzing, but it can feel a bit slow to liven up on quieter nights, and the music doesn't always sound its best due to the acoustics. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pint and a chat, but keep those little niggles in mind for a smoother experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat which really makes you feel at home.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of beers on tap, including a top-notch Guinness that's always a winner.
-
It's a cosy spot with a great atmosphere, perfect for catching up with mates or enjoying a game of darts.
-
The pub has a rich history and feels like a proper traditional London haunt, which adds to the charm.
-
Prices are reasonable, so you won't break the bank on a few pints, and they've got sports on the TVs for those match days.
Cons
-
It's cash only, which can be a bit of a hassle in this digital age when you're out and about.
-
No food on offer except for crisps or the odd special like stew on holidays, so you might need to pop out for a bite.
-
It can take a while to get into the swing of things if it's quiet, and the acoustics aren't great for music, making it a tad echoey.
-
Sometimes it gets crowded, especially during events, so you might have to wait for a seat.

It takes time to warm up, but people are friendly when it's not crawled. Staff are nice and the drinks are well priced. They don't serve food but you can bring in your own.
A pub I will definitely visit again. They've got the most welcoming staff behind the bar, a wide variety of decent beers on tap, and last, but not least they've always got sports on the TVs.
Typical London pub, I was there on Halloween evening, there was the deejay set and a lot of fun.
Good Guinness on tap, friendly and helpful staff.

The Grandest Pub In Plaistow.
The Abbey is located on a busy intersection on Barking Road at the southern end of Plaistow. The nearest Tube is Canning Town, it’s a fifteen minute walk to get here.
This pub was originally built in 1742 and started life as a Coaching Inn called The Crown. It was re-built by Taylor Walker in 1882 and called The Abbey Arms, now simplified to The Abbey.
This is a large bright and airy one bar pub that originally had four separate rooms. At the centre is the servery which has a solid wood counter and a traditional back bar. On the left hand side is a dartboard and a number of poser tables, to the right is a raised seating area that leads around to the pool table that sits below an atrium. This pub also has a Fives dartboard which is a rare site these days. Around the walls are a few framed West Ham shirts plus old black and white photos of Plaistow in years gone by. At the back of the pub is a partially covered beer garden.
The beer line up was straightforward mainstream beers but no cask. I decided on an Amstel, my pint was great, like most pubs in Plaistow, it cost south of a fiver. This pub doesn’t serve food but BJ’s Pie & Mash is just down the road if you’re feeling peckish.
I arrived around 2.30pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in September. The pub was fairly busy with an upbeat and lively atmosphere. The punters were predominantly fifty somethings discussing how well West Ham were doing at the time. There are four screens dotted around the pub which had the horse racing on, the soundtrack was a chilled rock and pop playlist.
The pub hosts regular Karaoke and Live Music nights, you can also watch Live Premier League games here also.
This is a lovely old Victorian pub and I can see why it was the busiest in the area. Pubs attract people in different ways, whether it’s architecture and decor, family and friends or just good old fashioned hospitality, it was all in abundance here. If you’re ever over this manor, be sure to visit The Abbey.

Cash only pub. We came here on St. Patrick’s Day and had a fun afternoon. Great Guinness! We were also offered some complementary stew which was delicious (but not vegetarian) - treat for St Patrick's... otherwise no food here at all, only crisps.
The music list was good; however, the acoustics were awful. We all felt so relieved when we stepped outside, as we felt like we were going deaf inside the pub due to poor sound quality & loudness.
The pub itself was quite spacious with a small beer garden at the back which would’ve been much nicer without parked cars in there.
Friendly and efficient staff. Good vibe. Children are allowed on premises until 19:00.
