About This Pub
You know, when I popped into The Black Lion Hotel, it really struck me as that classic Manchester gem – a cosy spot tucked away on Chapel Street, just a stone's throw from all the hustle and bustle. The rooms are dead comfy, with plush beds and all the little touches like smart TVs and walk-in showers that make you feel right at home, and it's brilliant value if you're after a budget-friendly base for exploring the city. Downstairs, the bar's a proper laugh, serving up cracking food and a great range of drinks, with quizzes and games that add to the fun atmosphere. The team there are absolute stars, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses – the noise from the bar can carry up to the rooms and disrupt a good night's sleep, and there've been a few grumbles about service, like breakfast not starting on time, which might put a dampener on your morning. Overall, it's a solid choice for a memorable stay, as long as you're prepared for the odd hiccup, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after that authentic pub vibe with a hotel twist.

The Black Lion Hotel in Manchester is a fantastic choice for travellers looking for affordable accommodation with character, especially if you're attending a concert or event at the nearby AO Arena.
The location is ideal—right in the heart of the city, within easy walking distance to major attractions, transport links, and of course, the vibrant Northern Quarter.
One of the standout features of the hotel is the value for money it offers. The rooms are well-furnished, combining modern comforts with a touch of traditional charm. The beds are very comfortable, and the rooms come equipped with everything you need for a pleasant stay. The complimentary breakfast is a real highlight—tasty, freshly cooked, and a great way to start the day.
The staff are incredibly welcoming and helpful, creating a relaxed, friendly atmosphere from check-in to check-out. It’s the kind of place where you feel genuinely looked after.
It’s worth noting that, due to its location above a pub and close to busy streets, there can be some noise, particularly on weekends. However, the hotel thoughtfully provides earplugs, and many guests still report a good night’s sleep.
All in all, the Black Lion Hotel is a solid, budget-friendly option with charm, comfort, and a central location. We would happily stay again.
Great spot, just 2 minutes off the very busy area near the cathedral. Played darts & pool and stayed for the Sunday night quiz. Great service from the bar team.
Loved it here. Got a bargain midweek stay including breakfast. You can also book direct for good deals. Staff were lovely, room looked great, clean and a super comfy bed. Fantastic location and we used the Q Park at Deansgate for parking. Hope to go back and stay again.
This is a terrible place to stay. Do not book this hotel for your own safety.
The chef was an hour late in the morning so nearly 90mins late to serve breakfast.
The breakfast timing was from 8am but it was nearly 9:50am to serve. The reception collects your debit card details so they can charge you for late check out. Even when the breakfast was not ready you have to eat fast and check out.
The noisy neighbouring rooms at night will keep you awake, the ear plugs provided is of no use.
The shower temperature control was not working so we couldn’t even shower as the water was too hot to shower. Disappointed to say the least.
This could potentially be worthy of 5 stars. The room was great in terms of a fully stocked bathroom with walk in shower, the bed was also very comfortable.
The pub downstairs is also great value for money and does lovely food.
I was on the 1st floor and the downside was the noise, particularly from outside. You can hear noise from the pub below, but obviously this stops as soon as the pub shuts, the outside nose from people and vehicles doesn't.
If there was a way to improve the outside noise filtering into the rooms I would definitely come back.
