About This Pub

Ah, the Black Lion – what a gem it is for anyone popping into Manchester for a pint, a meal, or even a quick overnight stay. I have to say, the staff really stole the show for me; they're so polite and eager to help, whether you're asking for local tips or just needing a recommendation on the menu. The location's spot on too – you're right in the thick of it, just a short stroll from the Arndale or the train station, which makes it dead handy for concerts or a day out shopping. The rooms are another highlight; they're newly done up with all the mod cons like smart TVs and spacious beds, making it feel like a proper treat rather than just a pit stop. And let's not forget the bar – it's a lovely spot to relax with a cold beer or catch the game in a laid-back atmosphere, with prices that won't break the bank. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few grumbles about the food not always hitting the mark; that 'spicy' hot dog was more mild than anything, which was a bit disappointing if you're after something with a kick. Plus, with no clear opening times and the place seeming a bit under the radar, it might catch you out if you're planning a spontaneous visit. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good night out or a comfortable base, but it'd be even better with a few tweaks to the menu – still, I'd pop back in a heartbeat for the warm welcome alone!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always welcoming and helpful, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in
  • It's in a cracking spot in Manchester, just off Chapel Street, super close to shopping, stations, and the AO Arena, perfect for city trips or events
  • The rooms are a real treat, with comfy king-sized beds, smart TVs for streaming, and all the little touches like tea-making facilities that make staying over a pleasure
  • They've got a solid selection of beers, ales, and drinks at reasonable prices, ideal for catching up with mates or watching the footy in a chilled-out setting
  • Great value on food deals, like the affordable plates that hit the spot for a quick bite
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit bland, like that 'spicy' hot dog that didn't pack much heat, so it might not wow your taste buds every time
  • The operating status seems a tad unclear, with no specific hours listed, which could leave you scratching your head about when it's open
  • As it's unclaimed by the owners, things like updates or improvements might not happen as quickly as you'd hope

Me and my family stayed at this pub /hotel to go to see Ollie Murs in concert. Unfortunately the concert got cancelled so our plans had to change. On arrival at the Black Lion, the staff we very welcoming and gave us some advice on what and where we could go. It's in a great city location, so we went into the city for a few cocktails, then back to the Black Lion where they had live entertainment and were brilliant. In the bar itself, they have plenty of tables and pool area, which is always a bonus. Great friendly staff, good drink choices, and a fab atmosphere. They do food with a great menu, we didn't have an evening meal there, but did have breakfast after our evening stay. The hotel rooms were extremely clean and very modern and we all had a very comfortable sleep. Breakfast was served from 8 am. until 11 a.m., and the menu had good choices. Within the eating area, there was tea, coffee, juices, and a variety of cereal with milk. The Black Lion is in a great city location, amazing staff and atmosphere, and I would highly recommend a visit or stay. Another bonus is that there are numerous secure carpark within a few minutes' walk. I would definitely go back when visiting Manchester again.

A great pub in Salford. The food was a tad bland, I had the "spicey" hot dog, which to me wasn't spicey, but on the other hand the beer was very good as was the service.

What a brilliant pub! We only stayed one night to go to the theatre, in that time we saw about 8 different members of staff - all of which were fantastic! Very polite and helpful. The room exceeded our expectations - simply stunning! Everything you'd need with plenty of space still. Breakfast was included in the price and it was just delicious. This was quite possibly the cheapest place we could find in Manchester and it was amazing. Would definitely stay again. 🤩 Only downside is there's no parking, but we got the train so it wasn't an issue for us.
