About This Pub
Ah, The Army & Navy, what a gem of a pub tucked away in London. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got this real community spirit that makes you want to pop in for a chat and a pint. The staff are absolute stars – think friendly faces who remember your usual order and go out of their way to make your visit special, like when they sorted out a birthday bash without a hitch. That beer garden is a highlight, especially on a sunny day; it's the perfect spot to catch a match with a cold one in hand, and at those prices, you won't break the bank. It's got that old-school charm with a neighbourhood feel, serving up good beers and snacks that keep things authentic. But, let's be honest, it's not flawless – it can be a bit on the quiet side sometimes, which is lovely if you're after a peaceful pint, but might not hit the spot if you're craving a lively crowd. And without a website, it's a bit of a faff to plan ahead. Overall, though, I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone looking for a relaxed, down-to-earth spot to unwind with mates; it's got that 4.6 rating for a reason, and from the reviews, it sounds like a place that keeps folks coming back year after year.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's got a fantastic beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sunshine, especially with a pint of Murphy's or Guinness at those brilliant prices.
-
The atmosphere is spot on – it's a proper old-school neighbourhood pub with a unique, cosy feel that's great for watching the match or celebrating occasions.
-
Beers are top-notch and affordable, and they've got classics like Taytos, which adds to that authentic local charm.
-
Easy to get to, just a short walk from Dalston Kingsland, and it's open every day from midday till late, so it's always an option for a casual get-together.
Cons
-
It can feel a bit quiet or 'lonely' at times, which might not suit everyone if you're after a buzzing crowd.
-
No official website means it's harder to check out menus or events in advance, so you might have to just turn up and see what's on offer.
-
Based on the reviews, it's mostly positive, but one person gave it four stars, hinting that while it's lovely, it might not wow everyone in every way – perhaps the selection could be a tad more varied.

Lonely place for a lovely day for some absolutely creaming creamers
Great place to watch the match, beer garden is lovely in the sunshine, Murphy’s and Guinness on tap at amazing prices! James (owner) is absolute gent, staff are very friendly.
This truly is the best pub in London. Been going for years. Just had my bday there and Jimmy was so accommodating and the Atmos was amazing. Big shout to Michelle behind the bar. The beer is good, they sell Taytos and it's a real neighbourhood pub. Old school, has an individual feel too it.

❤️ One of the best pubs in London.

I have visited The Army & Navy a few times over the years, usually on my way to see The Arsenal. My last visit was on St Patrick’s Day back in March this year. Getting here is easy, Dalston Kingsland station is a just five minute walk away.

This pub was built in the 1930’s by AE Sewell who was Truman Breweries principal architect. The pub retains many original features, is Grade II listed and is designed in a Neo Georgian style.
.
The decor oozes oldschool charm and the environment is welcoming and comfortable. There is a proper pub carpet, a good size bar, velour banquette bench seating, a dart board and for good measure, throw in a few TV’s showing live sport. One of the best features of this pub is the massive beer garden. There are loads of covered booths, TV’s showing live sport and also a new addition is the outdoor bar.
.
The beer selection is straight up reasonably priced keg options, there are a few craft beers available and the Guinness is well celebrated. The pub has recently teamed up with pizza gurus @yardsalepizza , so now you can have pizza delivered to the pub.
.
The atmosphere here is always warm and friendly, the pub attracts a broad crowd from all walks of life rather than just one demographic. This is down to Jimmy the Guv’nor who has been at the helm for the past 26 years and looks after his punters one and all. Jimmy gave me a tour of the pub and was telling me about how much work had gone in to the beer garden, which looks great.

The Army & Navy is one of my favourite pubs in London as it ticks so many boxes. There is the architectural heritage, old school decor, reasonably priced beer, a superb beer garden, welcoming atmosphere and the nicest Guv’nor you’ll ever meet. If you’ve not visited yet and want to experience how a pub should be, then put The Army & Navy at the top of your must visit pub list.
