About This Pub

Ah, The Anchor Inn, what a gem of a place tucked away in Wolverhampton near the canal – it's got that timeless country pub charm that's just begging to be shared with mates. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the food really steals the show; whether it's a delicious butternut squash burger with those little extras like gherkins and peppers, or a hearty steak that hits the spot, everything seems freshly made and full of flavour. It's brilliant for dog owners too, as you can bring your four-legged friend along for a wander and then settle in for a drink. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and quick to sort any hiccups, like that time they reduced the bill after a wait – now that's service with a smile. Perched by the canal, it's perfect for a summer stroll or a winter evening by the fire, with a well-stocked bar offering cask ales and gins that pair wonderfully with the scenery. On the flip side, it can get busy, so you might face a queue for your meal, especially on Sundays, and there's a bit of confusion with its operating status that could catch you out. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back day out, blending great grub, a welcoming atmosphere, and that classic British pub feel – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe book ahead to avoid any queues.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty classics like butternut squash burgers, juicy steaks, and top-notch Sunday roasts that leave you wanting more
  • It's a proper dog-friendly spot, perfect for popping in after a canal walk with your furry mate
  • The service is warm and welcoming, with staff going the extra mile, like sorting out extra gravy or even knocking a bit off the bill if things run a tad late
  • Lovely setting by the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, with beautiful gardens and cosy log fires for those chilly evenings
  • Great value for money, especially for a good pint, cask ales, or a glass of wine, and it's got that charming country pub atmosphere
Cons
  • There might be a bit of a wait for food during busy times, like peak Sunday lunch, though they do handle it well by making amends
  • It's listed as closed in some spots, which could be a mix-up, so it's worth double-checking before you head out to avoid disappointment

We visited last night and had such a lovely meal. The service was really good and my butternut squash burger was delicious. Loved the little pot of gherkins and the peppers on top of the burger. Enjoyed every mouthful and would highly recommend. My husband enjoyed his steak too. Don’t know how I did, but i made room for the mini chocolate brownie with ice cream and a baileys coffee…. A great price and it was such a nice end to a wonderful meal. We will definitely return. We had our dog Max with us who also enjoyed his visit and the treat he was given. Thanks for a lovely evening, your team were great.

The food was absolutely amazing as always and worth waiting for! Plus the drinks were great. The manager came over to tell us he had taken money off our bill due to a long wait, completely unprompted which was a nice surprise. We love it here and will be back even more! Another fantastic visit, delicious food as always. New visit March 2025, food was absolutely amazing and the service from Nat was just brilliant, new pics added. April 2025 visit, gorgeous food and drinks as always. Excellent friendly service from Scarlett. Lovely Tiramisu.

Great value for money, food was delicious, wait times were more than acceptable considering we were a walk in during peak Sunday lunch hours, drinks were great too. Extra portions of gravy as requested when I ran out were brought out promptly, dog friendly and canal side seating for summer warmer weather. Amazing friendly place to unwind or dine.

One of my favourite places for a Sunday roast. Also nice to just come for drinks. Service is always very friendly and the standard menu is really good as with all vintage inns. Also dogs are welcome and there's always plenty in the bar area! Plenty of parking, it's quite popular so recommend booking. Eaten quite a few times here and never had a bad meal.

Cracking venue for a bite to eat and good pint. For starters I thought I'd sample the prawn cocktail and pleasantly surprised when it came out, this in itself is a meal then for main course I sampled the Lamb Shank complete with mash and veg which I thoroughly enjoyed. Well worth a visit folks and just to add the staff were brilliant and we did give a tip for all their hard work
