About This Pub
Ah, The American Bar – it's one of those spots in Belfast that just feels special, tucked away in Sailortown with its tales of dockers and even a world-champion boxer gracing the walls. I've got to say, the craft beers on tap are an absolute delight; whether it's a crisp Kinnegar or something from Boundary, they're pouring some cracking options that make it easy to while away an afternoon. The live music nights are brilliant too, with open sessions that pull in talented locals and create that real community feel – it's like stumbling into a friendly gathering where everyone's up for a singalong. The staff are generally spot on, quick with a smile and knowledgeable about their drinks, and it's nice that they welcome dogs, making it a flexible choice for a casual meet-up. On the flip side, I have heard a couple of stories about drinks not quite hitting the mark, like a flat lager that left one person disappointed, and the location might be a trek if you're coming from the city centre. Overall, though, with its high ratings and buzzing atmosphere, it's a place I'd happily recommend for a good night out – just keep your expectations in check for the little things, and you'll have a whale of a time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The craft beer selection is top-notch, with brews like Kinnegar and Boundary that are full of flavour and always a hit for a relaxing pint.
-
It's got a brilliant live music scene, with impromptu sessions and events that really bring the craic – perfect for enjoying some of Belfast's best local talent.
-
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, steeped in history from its Sailortown roots, complete with fascinating photos and memorabilia that make you feel right at home.
-
Friendly bar staff who know their stuff, offering great service and even accommodating dogs, which is a lovely touch if you're out with your furry friend.
-
They show live BT Sport for the big games, and there's tasty food like ham and cheese toasted sandwiches from The Grateful Bread to keep you going.
Cons
-
There have been a few grumbles about drink quality, like a flat pint of lager in one case, which could put a dampener on things if you're after a perfect pour.
-
Being on the edge of town near the docks might not suit everyone, as it's a bit out of the way if you're not already in that area.
-
With the business unclaimed online, it might mean they're not as on top of feedback or updates as they could be, potentially missing out on improvements.

This is an amazing pub, set in the Docklands Belfast. A fantastic music venue, highlighting some of our best local musicians. Also they serve a great pint of Guinness.
When you want to chill and have a relaxing pint this is the place to go to. Great service from bar staff who really know what they're doing. A good selection of Irish beers and larger to try. On the edge of town and near the ferry terminals . Great to sit either in or, outside. Definitely worth a return visit.
This is my favourite bar in Belfast. Great selection of beers they always have a special cask from a guest brewery. The bar staff are really friendly. Dogs are allowed too which is an added bonus if you like the company or being your own.
There is food served by The Grateful Bread and it's a very good menu usually find something nice to eat. I like the beef chilli on chips.
Saving the best for last, plenty of live music to choose from Saturday afternoon club had a great selection of live performers my faves are the backbone blues band or Tony Villiers and the villains. Can't go wrong 👏
Lovely pub does fantastic ham and cheese toasted sandwich and some lovely beer
This must be the worst pint of lager I have ever received asked for a pint of perroni served to me flat I asked the barman to put a head on it which he did within minutes the pint was flat completely I must say the barman was pleasant but he should not be allowed behind the bar I wasn’t even offered a perroni glass and decided if this is the quality of the beer I was served that me and my partner would just leave with my pint half drank
