About This Pub
Ah, The Alwyne Castle – it's one of those classic London pubs that really captures the best of British hospitality with its own quirky twist, tucked away in the heart of Highbury. From the reviews I've had a look at, most people absolutely love the place for its inviting atmosphere; it's all about that homely feel where you can kick back with a pint and soak in the buzz, especially with fun events like DJ nights that keep the energy up. The staff stand out too – they're genuinely friendly and go the extra mile, whether it's chatting about menu picks or just making sure you're comfortable, which adds a real personal touch to your visit. And let's not forget the drinks and food; there's a solid range to explore, from tasty meals to a variety of brews that make it ideal for a casual meal or a proper night out. But, to be fair, it's not all roses – there have been a couple of grumbles about the food not always hitting the mark, with stories of underwhelming dishes and frustrating waits that left a bad taste. Still, with such a strong overall rating, I'd say it's worth popping in if you're nearby; just maybe keep it light if you're starving, and you'll likely have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is lively and full of character, making it a brilliant spot for a relaxed catch-up or a fun night out with mates.
-
The staff are incredibly welcoming and attentive, always ready with a smile and helpful recommendations to make your visit memorable.
-
They've got a cracking selection of drinks and flavoursome food options that cater to all tastes, whether you're after a lazy lunch or a hearty dinner.
-
It's got that authentic, homely vibe with quirky charm, perfect for enjoying a pint in a welcoming setting.
Cons
-
Food quality can be inconsistent at times, with some experiences turning out disappointing and even inedible, as shared in a few reviews.
-
There might be long waits for your meal, which could put a dampener on things if you're hoping for a quick bite.
-
Occasional slip-ups in service or preparation can lead to a less than ideal visit, though it's not the norm from what I've seen.

Something has gone badly wrong here. The picture of the children burger speak for itself.
Terrible quality food, cooked even worst. At least they refunded the stuff that was completely inedible. All this for a 45 minutes wait. What a disaster
Popped down to the pub last Friday and it was absolutely brilliant. The atmosphere was spot on lively, friendly, and full of good banter. The DJ was smashing it all night, spinning proper tunes that kept the vibe buzzing. Whether you were having a dance or just chilling with a pint, the music was top-notch. Couldn’t have asked for a better night out top marks all round
Would just like to send some appreciation for the fantastic service I received during my recent visit to your pub. From the moment I walked in, the staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive- Especially Stephen.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and it was clear that the staff genuinely cared about ensuring everyone had a great experience. Keep up the excellent work!
Had a great time! Definitely worth a visit. The atmosphere was great, we loved the food and the choice of drinks was superb.
My friends and I booked a table in the conservatory here last week. It was amazing overall!
The manager (or supervisor?) sat us down when we arrived; he’s an Irish man, and my friend who’s half-Irish had a fun convo with him. He also gave us recommendations on the menu as half of the group is vegetarian/vegan. I had the linguini which was very nice, my friends were also quite happy with their meals.
We ordered the drinks at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and helpful with the drinks options, since I wasn’t sure which non-alcoholic option to go with. They have quite a nice selection of cocktails, but our group (except for me) eventually just went with Pimm’s.
The price was reasonable for that area I’d say. I would probably visit again for the environment, they have a very large outdoor seating area.
A member of my group had celiac disease, and our server gave her the allergen menu. She’s from the States and was quite surprised they had dedicated allergen menus. Her child was also able to choose from their children’s menu, he tends to be a picky eater but I think he enjoyed the children’s fish and chips.
Thanks to the team for such a wonderful time, we were a large group so really appreciated the hospitality. God bless you.
