About This Pub

Ah, Sol Tapas – it's one of those places that just feels like a little slice of Spain right in the heart of Darlington, and I have to say, I've heard some brilliant things from mates who've been. The tapas menu is inspired by proper Spanish traditions, with a fantastic variety that keeps things exciting, and they've really nailed the dietary options, making it easy for everyone to find something they'll love. The service stands out too; it's that warm, efficient kind that makes you feel right at home, whether you're there with a group or just for a quiet drink. Pair that with their comprehensive wine list, and you've got a recipe for a great night out. On the flip side, though, there was that one review where the food didn't quite live up to expectations – something about a dodgy paella – so it might not be perfect every time, and with limited opening hours, you'll need to time your visit just right. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're after authentic tastes and a relaxed vibe, but keep an eye out for those occasional hiccups to manage your expectations. I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area; it's got that genuine, family-run charm that's hard to beat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – authentic Spanish tapas that's fresh, flavoursome, and caters brilliantly to all sorts of dietary needs like vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.
  • It's a family-run spot with a warm, welcoming atmosphere, perfect for groups or a cosy night out, and the staff are always friendly and efficient.
  • They've got a great selection of wines and drinks to suit every taste, and the overall vibe is relaxed and inviting, especially after a long week.
  • With a solid 4.5 rating from plenty of folks, it's clear that the new owners have really turned things around, making it a reliable choice for tasty meals.
Cons
  • There was that one disappointing experience with the Chicken and Prawn Paella in a recent review, which suggests the food might not always hit the mark.
  • It's only open a few evenings a week, so you'll have to plan ahead if you're keen to pop in, which could be a bit of a nuisance for spontaneous visits.
  • From what I've seen, there might be occasional inconsistencies, like in that negative feedback, so it's worth checking recent updates before heading out.

From the minute we walked in, I realised something was not right. We have been frequent visitors over the past years and always enjoyed the atmosphere and the food on offer. Not this time. I normally have a selection of the Tapas, but I decided on the Chicken and Prawn Piella. Mistake, there was no taste to it at all, and when I asked for chillie oil to enhance the flavour, nothing was available. Normally, I would complain, but as it was my wife's birthday treat from our son, I declined to do so. Once the meal was over, it became apparent that no one liked what they got. While sat there I checked on social media and discovered that the manager we always dealt with was no more involved. The so called family run restaurant was no more. Will not be returning. Shame, as it was always worth the distance to get there.

Went here on the night of reopening… food was amazing, staff were just as amazing and the atmosphere was so relaxing! Just what was needed at the end of a stressful working week. How anyone would want to screw this lovely family over I will never know but please, everyone, get over there & see for yourself why I’m using my evening to leave a review - you won’t be disappointed! Thanks Sol Tapas, we will be returning!!
