About This Pub

You know, when I think about Six Poor Folk, it's got this lovely old-school feel in a building dating back to 1480, right in the heart of Knaresborough, and it's just brimming with that warm, community spirit. The food really steals the show – people are buzzing about the sharing plates, like that divine whipped goats cheese and those must-try signature fries, and the Sunday roasts are spot on for a proper hearty meal. Pair that with a great line-up of local beers and cocktails, and you've got a spot that's ideal for unwinding after a day out. The staff are absolute stars, always on hand with a smile and quick to sort things out, even if the kitchen's about to close. On the flip side, though, if you're eyeing up the place for a bigger do, it's a shame they're only open for private hires midweek, and sorting tables for more than eight folks means picking up the phone rather than booking online. Plus, with everything shutting at 10 PM, it might not hit the mark for those evening plans that stretch on. All in all, it's a solid choice for a chilled pub experience – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as the positives far outweigh the little niggles.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's incredibly dog-friendly, making it a brilliant spot if you're out with your four-legged mate.
  • The food is spot on – from delicious sharing plates and whipped goats cheese to standout Sunday roasts and those signature fries that everyone raves about.
  • Service is top-notch; the staff are attentive, welcoming, and handle things smoothly, even if you're running late.
  • They've got a cracking selection of local beers, ciders, wines, and cocktails, plus it's set in a historic building from 1480 that adds real character.
  • The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, ideal for a casual meal or a quick drink, and it's even won awards like Bar of the Year.
Cons
  • Private events are only available Monday to Thursday, which could be a bit limiting if you're planning something for the weekend.
  • Online bookings are capped at eight people, so if you're with a larger group, you'll have to call or drop in, which might not be as straightforward.
  • It wraps up by 10 PM every day, so it's not the place for a late-night session if you're after somewhere that stays open longer.

Really nice meal, especially the meatballs in tomato sauce. Very relaxed setting - I sat in the garden on a nice evening. Very attentive waiting staff. Great comms beforehand and my table was kept open despite a transport delay.

Excellent across the board. We got there just as they were closing the kitchen and they still squeezed us in. The Sunday roast was great. The drinks selection was good. The staff were friendly with a good atmosphere. They even had a section with little cakes at the bar.

A great addition to the 2025 Good Beer Guide - some great cask beers pouring today with guests from Big Trip and Night Jar.
