About This Pub

Ah, Shepherds' Hall Ale House & Victoria Rooms – what a gem tucked away on Chapel Street in Chorley. I've got to say, it's one of those places that really hits the mark for a good old pub crawl. The beer selection is top drawer, with an excellent array of real ales and other tipples that keep things interesting, and the staff are generally chuffed to help you pick the perfect one. It's dog-friendly too, which makes it feel even more homely, and the live music adds a bit of buzz that livens up the traditional, industrial-style decor. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses; I heard from a mate who got turned away before official closing time, which seemed a tad unfair and left him heading elsewhere. The website's a bit of a letdown as well – nothing fancy, just basic hosting info – so you might end up winging it on the day. Still, with such a strong overall feel and mostly glowing feedback, I'd reckon it's worth a visit for anyone after a solid pint and a chat, just keep an eye on the clock to make the most of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of real ales, ciders, and other drinks that cater to all tastes – perfect for a proper pint session.
  • Friendly and helpful staff who are more than willing to let you try a few options before you commit, making it feel welcoming and personal.
  • It's got a great atmosphere with traditional decor and industrial vibes, plus regular live music that adds a lively touch to the evenings.
  • Dog-friendly setup means you can bring your furry mate along, which is always a bonus for us animal lovers.
  • Overall, it's a solid spot for meeting friends, enjoying a chat, and soaking in that classic pub feel, backed by plenty of positive vibes from regulars.
Cons
  • Last orders can be a bit unpredictable; one chap was turned away early even though the pub was listed as open longer, which might leave you disappointed if you're popping in late.
  • The website is pretty basic and not all that helpful – it's more of a placeholder than a proper resource, so you might need to rely on other info for details.
  • There are occasional gripes about service not being consistent, like feeling rushed or arbitrary decisions, which could put a dampener on an otherwise good night.

Turned up at 2250 & I was told, “oh with stop serving”. They were down as “last orders at 2300”, so it is completely arbitrary and they clearly CBA Went to the Lloyd’s No.1 Bar instead.

Met a friend to drink a good pint or two and talk on a Saturday afternoon, was not disappointed. Excellent range of draft beers to try, with different tastes and alcohol content. Staff more than happy to offer tastes. Did not eat here but returned in the evening when an excellent musician was playing and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming and positive. Will be returning.

Jorvic was surprised to find out we came here in 2019. Seems like a lifetime ago. Bigger than I remember..or have they expanded? Has two bars now. Large corner room, room off to back and another room with the better real ale selection. Jorvic had an all time favourite; Loweswater Gold from Cumbria brewery. Yummy. Friday afternoon seems to be turn up and play music session. ( first and third Friday of the month.) Something like 24 - 30 musicians joining in. Accordians, fiddles, woidwind etc..even a harp turned up. They all seem to know the traditional tunes in a mega jamming session. Madge wanted to add percussion.

Great find whilst wandering around Chorley on a Sunday afternoon. Could possibly describe the decor as traditional and industrial. There was a really good selection of real ales, plus cider, various wines, gins, and fresh coffee available. Friendly and helpful staff.
