About This Pub

Ah, Scholars Bar – what a lovely find in Scarborough! From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this fantastic array of beers, ales, and ciders that any beer enthusiast would rave about; I mean, trying those cask ales in perfect condition sounds like a real treat. The team behind the bar are absolute gems, always up for a chat and making newcomers feel like regulars, which adds such a nice, homely touch to the place. Prices are sensible too, so you won't feel short-changed after a round or two. It's spot on for watching the footie or any sport with all those screens, and even on busier nights, people seem to manage finding a spot to settle in. That said, it's not without its quirks – there aren't any games to play, so if you're in the mood for something more lively beyond just sipping and chatting, you might miss that. And on packed evenings, it could get a bit too lively for those seeking a peaceful pint. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a good night out, and I'd say it's well worth popping in if you're in the area – just go with the flow and enjoy the atmosphere!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The selection of beers, ales, and ciders is absolutely brilliant – it's one of the widest I've come across, with cask ales in top-notch condition that really hit the spot.
  • The staff are so welcoming and friendly; they make you feel right at home, like you're chatting with old mates behind the bar.
  • Pricing is spot on for a good night out – you can get a cider and a pint for just over £8, which feels fair and doesn't break the bank.
  • It's a great spot for catching the game with plenty of TV screens, and even when it's buzzing, you can usually snag a seat without too much hassle.
Cons
  • There aren't any bar games on offer, so if you're after something more interactive like darts or pool, you might find it a bit lacking.
  • It can get pretty busy at times, which might make it feel a tad overwhelming if you're looking for a quiet corner to relax in.

Nice pub, was very busy when we came but still managed to find a seat. It cost me just over £8 for a cider and a pint of moretti so reasonable pricing too, would come back

Last week my wife Theresa and I went on a mini break in Scarborough and being a fan of real cask ale googled to see what was available. Found two pubs and didn't need to look further. The closest to our hotel Scholar's was the stand out of the two. It is a sports bar with loads of tv screens but with no volume, just background music. The choice of perfectly kept beers was wonderful and the owner Danny made us feel so welcome. Both he and all the bar staff were so friendly and after a couple of days we were on first name terms. On our last day a Thursday we were advised that being quiz night there would be no seating room because all tables were reserved for the quiz. Although it was busy the atmosphere was amazing and we were thoroughly entertained watching the quiz and the rugby league Danny put on after I requested it earlier in the afternoon. We were also brought seats by regulars doing the quiz. It was quite sad on Thursday that it was our last night. If you go anywhere in Scarborough for a few drinks in pleasant surroundings you must go here. Hopefully we will return, Thanks Danny for your hospitality, you made our week. John and Theresa.

Scholars Bar is a traditional pub with a good selection of beers, lager and cider including nine hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The cask ales we tried were in excellent condition. There are no bar games, but the pub has tv screens for watching Sport. The staff are welcoming and the pub is dog friendly. The pub has won the Camra award for Best Pub in Scarborough for the last two years. It is a great pub worth visiting.

This place has the widest selection of beers I've ever seen in a pub. The landlord was extremely helpful and friendly, we really enjoyed chatting with him. Although it was our first visit we were welcomed as if we were regulars. The only drawback for us....... We live so far away! Highly recommend a visit here. Thanks

Visiting Scarborough for the weekend we headed for this pub after reading the reviews on here. And it was well worth the walk from our B&B. Never been in a pub with such a fantastic selection of cask ales! My wife loved the ciders on offer too. The attention to detail with the pub name on beer mats and glasses ect was amazing. Great atmosphere and friendly locals. Nice and clean. The landlord takes great pride in this establishment and certainly knows how to look after the beers on offer. Also has won the town pub of the year 2024. Recommended.
