About This Pub

Ah, Ruskins Bar – it's one of those places in Kendal that really grows on you once you get past the initial quirks. From what I've gathered chatting about it with mates, the live music is the star of the show; whether it's a free jamming night with everything from blues to rock classics, or special events like band performances and DJ sets, it has this infectious energy that gets everyone involved. The drinks are a proper bargain too, with cheap beers and a cracking selection of whiskies, making it ideal for a casual catch-up without spending a fortune. The staff are spot on, always friendly and accommodating, and the locals add to that warm, community feel. On the flip side, it can start off a bit subdued or even strange when it's not busy, and I've heard a few tales of avoiding it on Fridays due to the odd whiff or overcrowding that might put you off. Plus, with its evening-only schedule and not being open every day, it's not the go-to for a lazy afternoon pint. All in all, if you're up for a night of music and good company in the town centre, it's a solid choice – just plan around the busier times for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live music scene is absolutely brilliant – it's got that real buzz with a wide range of bands and events that keep things lively and engaging.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced, making it a wallet-friendly spot for a night out without breaking the bank.
  • The staff and locals are so welcoming; it's easy to strike up a chat and feel right at home in this cosy bar.
  • Situated right in the heart of Kendal, it's conveniently placed for a quick stop after exploring the town.
Cons
  • It can feel a bit odd when it's quiet at the start of the evening, so you might need to time your visit just right.
  • Certain nights, like Fridays, can be a bit off-putting due to some less than pleasant smells or crowds, so it's worth steering clear if you're after a relaxed vibe.
  • The opening hours are a tad limited, mostly evenings and not every day, which might not suit everyone looking for a spontaneous pint.

Bit of a strange place at first but when the band started and people started pouring in the place come alive. Extremely cheap aswell. A must if in Kendal.

Great bar. Just steer clear on a Friday night. I've tried a couple of times and couldn't stay as there is a couple that go a stink the place out

This bar is in one of the yards off the main shopping strip in Kendal town centre, but is easy to find because of the large sign on the side of the building facing on to the street. The pub is reasonably cheap as a round for two only cost £6.80. In addition there is a great range of whiskeys, but limited ales and lagers. The pub has two rooms at the top of the stairs and on the night I was there was a band on in one room, charging 5 quid on the door. However, I found it frustrating that as the night went on people from the other room were not prevented from coming in having not paid making it feel that I had paid the entry fee for no reason. In addition, these people were trying to dance and invade the personal space of any female in the room, dropping glasses on the floor and mocking the band - none of which was dealt with by the the staff. Overall despite the drinks being cheap and the bands okay I ended up not enjoying the night out. If I go again and the experience is better and the staff able to manage these situations better, I will update this review, but for now I don't recommend Ruskin's Bar.

Nice a little bar, staff are professionals, manager is fantastic and i thank you for accommodating me to pick up my forgotten phone on your closing hours. This pub/bar have fantastic DJ'S with free entry. Cheap beer to compare to big cities. The atmosphere will match your descent if not high standard. Keep up the good work team Ruskins.
