About This Pub
Ah, the Royal Oak—it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its beautiful, traditional charm right on the edge of Cheadle village. I've heard from a few mates that the ambience is spot on, with that warm, almost Irish-inspired feel that makes you want to settle in for the evening. The food's a highlight for many; think hearty baguettes and well-presented sharing plates that come out piping hot, which is always a win when you're tucking into lunch on a Sunday. And let's not forget the beer garden—it's got this covered area that's just ideal for when the weather's playing up, making it a go-to for families or if you're out with the dog. On the flip side, though, service can be a mixed bag; some days it's all smiles and efficiency, but others, it seems the staff might be having an off moment, leaving you feeling a bit overlooked. The music can crank up a notch too, which might not suit everyone if you're after a quiet chinwag. All in all, it's a solid choice for a local pint or meal, but I'd say pop in with realistic expectations and maybe check the vibe on the day—it's got that community heart, but like any good pub, it's not perfect, and that's what makes it feel real.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming and welcoming, with a warm, friendly vibe that makes you feel right at home, especially in that lovely beer garden with its covered area—perfect for a relaxed pint on a breezy day.
-
They've got some cracking food options; a few folks raved about the baguettes and sharing platters, served hot and tasty, which is just what you want after a wander around Cheadle.
-
It's super family-friendly and dog-friendly too, so you can bring the little ones or your furry mate along without any fuss, plus it's wheelchair accessible and has EV charging nearby for added convenience.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit inconsistent—some visits are spot on, but others have had staff with a less than cheerful attitude, which might put a dampener on your outing.
-
The music can get a tad too loud at times, making it hard to chat over a drink, as one person mentioned it felt more like a community centre than a cosy pub.
-
The drink selection is a smidge limited on real ales, so if you're a proper ale enthusiast, you might find yourself wanting more variety to choose from.

Yeah not bad, and has a nice little covered area in the beer garden
What a little GEM… beautiful place to eat, ambience is warm and friendly, with a hint of Ireland.
The food was amazing, hot as you would expect. My food choice was ‘Chicken & Stuffing baguette, with gravy, onion chutney and skin on fries’…. Perfect!
Been here a few times in the last 40 years. Had a major revamp about 5- 6 years ago. It needed it. Jorvic tells me it used to have very loud live music rock nights. They always have a lovely floral basket display to the front. Inside there is a bar area with two further rooms to left and right as you enter. Good sized rear beer garden. I have had good food here. On this visit I just had a pint of Robinson's Unicorn. Very good. Well worth a visit says Jorvic.
AWFUL food and service!
Went in for pub lunch around 1pm on a Sunday and were the only people in there for a while which speaks volumes. The service was shocking, bar staff had bad attitude, music was blaring and the food was AWFUL (see picture)
We felt like we were in a local community centre in 2008! Warmed up dry pies served in plastic baskets with PAPER cutlery!? The management really needs changing here, shocking all round
We were visiting Cheadle and after walking up through the centre we spotted this place we went in and were able to get seats no problem at all.
We ordered at the bar, which has the usual selection of drinks, is bit limited on real ales.
The food was tasty and well presented, we choose to share a sharing platter.
