About This Pub

You know, when I think about the Roaring Raindrop, it's one of those pubs that just hits the mark for a good time without any fuss. It's tucked away in Abingdon and feels like a proper community hub, especially with all the live sports on the screens and those Thursday Boogie Bingo nights that get everyone laughing and joining in. The food's a real winner too – think hearty meals that come out quick and hot, with deals that make it easy on the wallet, and the staff are just lovely, always on hand with a smile and a chat. It's family-friendly and even welcomes dogs, which is brilliant if you're out for a walk. On the downside, being part of a chain means it doesn't quite have that one-of-a-kind feel; it's a bit polished and predictable compared to some quirky locals. Plus, a couple of people I've heard from reckon the name change took away a nod to the area's history, and it can get a tad packed during big events, so if you're after a peaceful pint, you might want to time it right. All things considered, it's a dependable spot for a fun evening, and I'd say give it a go if you're in the area – you'll likely leave with a smile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • Fantastic value with deals on food and drinks, like the two mains for a steal, perfect for a budget-friendly night out.
  • A buzzing atmosphere with live sports on Sky and TNT, plus fun events like Boogie Bingo on Thursdays and Quiz Night on Tuesdays that really get the crowd going.
  • Great facilities including a beer garden, free WiFi, and plenty of parking, making it easy to pop in for a pint or stay for the evening.
  • The food is spot on – piping hot, served quickly, and with options that cater to families and dog lovers alike.
Cons
  • As it's a Greene King chain pub, it might feel a bit generic and lack that unique, cosy local charm some independent spots have.
  • One or two folks have mentioned missing the old name, which tied into local history, so it could feel like a bit of tradition has been lost.
  • With all the events and sports screenings, it can get quite lively and crowded at times, which might not suit if you're after a quiet drink.

Booked here for a memorial day. Was really well looked after. Ian and his staff took care of all of our needs for the day. Buffet was great and service from the bar was excellent. Highly recommend

We’re proud to be locals, and we’ve truly never seen this place better—Ian has completely transformed it! The atmosphere is vibrant, welcoming, and full of energy. Boogie Bingo on Thursdays is an absolute blast, and the Tuesday Quiz Night is always a highlight of our week. We popped in for Easter Sunday and were blown away—hands down the best steak I’ve ever had in here! Huge compliments to the new chef, Lewis—he’s a fantastic addition to the team. This place just keeps getting better! Ian, my Dad would get on so well with you and would love what you’ve done to his 2nd home! ❤️

Nice place, such a shame the name changed, it used to celebrate the MG Midget one Abingdons legacies. Now it celebrates the rain and get pissed on in the whole of England. Apart from that. Superb place. Great food, plenty of parking and polite staff. Most excellent.

Just been in for lunch, between the refurb, new manager and staff it was absolutely wonderful! We also came for dinner a couple of weeks ago and again was amazing. Food piping hot and came quickly. Staff friendly and attentive. Shout out to the new manager who was also the chef today, incredible change!
