About This Pub

Ah, the Prince of Wales – it's one of those classic village pubs that just feels like a proper hideaway, you know? I love how they've kept that old-school charm with roaring fires in the winter and a sunny garden for those brighter days; it's perfect for nipping in after a walk with the dog, as they're so welcoming to furry friends with treats at the ready. The Sunday roasts sound like a winner based on what folks have said, and they've got a decent lineup of real ales and gins that could keep any beer enthusiast happy. Plus, if you're planning something special like a birthday bash or even a wedding, they've got the setup with a mobile bar and marquee to make it memorable. On the downside, though, their opening hours are all over the place, so you'd want to double-check on Facebook to avoid turning up to a closed door. And let's be honest, the food menu isn't the most varied – one review mentioned no vegetarian options, which is a shame if you're after something lighter or meat-free. There was also a mention of the place feeling a bit dreary and overpriced at times, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. All in all, it's a solid choice for a traditional pub experience if you're in the area, but go with an open mind and perhaps plan ahead for the best visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a proper traditional village pub with roaring fires and a sunny garden, making it a cosy spot for a pint and a chat.
  • They're really dog-friendly, with treats on offer, which is great if you're popping in with your four-legged mate.
  • The Sunday roasts come highly recommended, and they've got a solid selection of real ales and gins to choose from.
  • They cater for all sorts of events like weddings or birthdays, with options for a mobile bar and a marquee, which adds a nice touch for special occasions.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming, with friendly staff who go the extra mile, as shared in a few reviews about accommodating groups and making events memorable.
Cons
  • Opening hours can be a bit unpredictable, so it's wise to check their Facebook page before heading out to avoid disappointment.
  • Food options are limited, especially for vegetarians, with one person mentioning no choices at all, which might leave some folks out.
  • Some experiences described the place as feeling cold and unloved, suggesting it might not always hit the mark on ambiance.
  • Prices seem a tad on the high side for the food on offer, as noted in a review about greasy spoon-style meals at exaggerated costs.
  • With the current status showing it's closed or not fully operating, you might find it tricky to visit on a whim.

Prince of Wales pub, Shippon. Had a Sunday roast here for about 18 guests to celebrate my mothers 90th birthday. Nic and her team worked closely with me to ensure the occasion went off without a hitch, even accommodating my father in his wheel chair and his height adjustable table. The food was excellent and the addition of the log fire made for a convivial atmosphere. Many thanks Nic for a wonderful afternoon that all enjoyed and commented upon what a lovely venue you have..

Stowe is a beautiful example of Capability Brown's vision. We love to walk here. This time, we were there to perform. Military Wives singing as part of the for their tomorrow installation. Fabulous experience.

Welcoming atmosphere, decent pork roast and great service, flexible booking given we had to change our time. locals in the bar were clearly relishing the Sunday afternoon as they should do - a positive experience and what country pubs should be like 👍

Not a good experience at all, the place was cold, dreary and unloved. Not a single vegetarian option on the menu or 'specials'. This was apparently due to a new 'chef', well if you like chips with everything and greasy spoon cafe food at exaggerated prices then you'll love it.

Lovely little village pub with good outside seating. It's fairly old school and traditional which I love. Very friendly lady served me which pleases me as too many pubs these days seem to have over worked, underpaid and stressed out staff. I was on a bike ride so perfect stop off point. Top packet of pork scratchings and pint you can't go wrong by popping in here. Food served Thursday to Sunday.
