About This Pub
Ah, the Pommel Horse – it's one of those pubs that really grows on you if you're in the Hemel Hempstead area, about 24 miles from the London buzz. I've got to say, the warm welcomes from the staff make it feel like you're catching up with friends, and they've got some cracking deals like tucking into meals for just a tenner, which is brilliant for keeping things affordable. The family-friendly setup with perks like WiFi and a pool table means it's versatile for a quick bite or a relaxed afternoon. Plus, when the food's on form, like those fresh, crispy fries or a well-cooked steak, it's genuinely satisfying and leaves you wanting more. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – I've heard a few stories of meals arriving undercooked or burnt, and orders getting muddled, which can turn a nice outing into a bit of a letdown. Then there's the noise; some evenings get disrupted by loud groups with their own music, making it tough to have a proper natter. All in all, it's a solid spot for a casual get-together if you're up for a bit of give and take, but maybe best to go in with realistic expectations and keep an eye on the service to make the most of it.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in – it's like chatting with old mates behind the bar.
-
Great value for money with deals like 'Tuck in for a tenner', where you can enjoy hearty meals without breaking the bank, perfect for a casual night out.
-
Family-friendly vibe with facilities like a pool table, WiFi, and a car park, so it's easy to pop in with the kids or after a drive.
-
The atmosphere is wholesome and relaxed, offering a nice break from the hustle, especially if you're looking for a spot not too far from London.
-
When the food hits the mark, it's spot on – fresh, crispy chips and perfectly cooked steaks have left some visitors raving and planning return trips.
Cons
-
Service can be hit or miss, with a few tales of orders getting mixed up, long waits, or even food arriving undercooked or burnt, which is a real shame.
-
Noise levels might spoil the mood at times, like when large groups bring in their own speakers, making it hard to enjoy a quiet chat over dinner.
-
Inconsistent experiences overall, as some visits are fantastic while others leave you disappointed, so it might not be the most reliable choice every time.
-
Even though it's inexpensive, the occasional slip-ups in food quality could put a damper on things if you're hoping for a flawless meal.

We were served by Enya. She was really welcoming and friendly to us. The food was great value! Will be returning in the future.
Absolutely had an amazing time Easter Sunday , the food was perfect , deserts were fantastic!! Everything was served within 10/15 minutes of ordering , Cathrine and the waitresses was so polite and friendly with my kids we had the tv turned on for the kids in the booth , my kids were given a chocolate egg each from staff . I would 100% reccomend this restaurant to anyone for any occasion also with or without family a kids it’s brilliant.
AVOID this place it's horrific . First of all my partners chicken was raw and on the restaurant side a huge group of girl had thier own HUGE personal Bluetooth speaker blaring out music ????? HOW IS THIS ALLOWED people want a quiet meal but no they have ruined it . No one to speak too about the awful meal , think I'm lying ? Pan into your cctv it's 19:55pm on Sunday 16th March you'll see them . Huge Bluetooth speaker with flashing lights in the restaurant part . Disgusting . Everyone avoid this place . If you see this review we want some compensation back . I have my E receipt
We had lunch here today, and it was a fantastic experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. Even though it was a quiet Wednesday, the food quality was excellent. The fries were fresh, crispy, and absolutely delicious. My steak was cooked perfectly. My husband ordered the Wednesday special, and he really enjoyed it too. We also tried a couple of cocktails, and they were amazing—well-balanced and refreshing. Overall, a wonderful meal, and we’ll definitely be back!
This evening when we went with the family it was very disappointing, and we go here often and never a problem so gutted this evening we came at 6 left after 8, they got our food wrong a few times when they brought my food it was burnt couldnt eat it. when orded pudding it came out just over half hour was going to ask for a refund and go elsewhere as the children was getting frustrated as can imagine. I don't like to complain but this was ridiculous this evening and charged more for kids too as was supposed to be £1.
The photo is the burger it's normally alot lighter than that this is burnt
