About This Pub

Ah, the Old Fat Ox, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, doesn't it? From what I've gathered, folks absolutely rave about the food – whether it's a massive Sunday roast with all the trimmings or some homemade tapas that keeps you coming back, it's clear they've got the recipes spot on. The staff are a delight, always chatting away and making sure everything's just right, which really lifts the atmosphere. And let's not forget that beer garden; it's brilliant for soaking up the sun with a cold pint and those views over Holywell Dene are something else. On the flip side, parking's a bit tight with only a couple of spots, so you might have to play the waiting game, and it can get packed on weekends, meaning booking's a must to snag a table. Overall, it's a solid spot for a bite and a bevvy, especially if you're up for a laid-back afternoon with mates or even the dog in tow – I'd say give it a go if you're in Whitley Bay, you won't be disappointed!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant – from hearty Sunday roasts to tasty tapas and burgers, it's all freshly made and hits the spot every time.
  • The staff are so friendly and welcoming; they go out of their way to make you feel right at home, which really adds to the cosy vibe.
  • It's super dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for a pint and even treat them to their own meal – perfect for walks in the area.
  • That beer garden is a gem, with plenty of space and stunning views over Holywell Dene; it's ideal for sunny days or catching events like the Euros on a big screen.
  • Prices are really reasonable for what you get, making it a great spot for a casual night out without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • Parking can be a bit of a hassle with only two spaces on site, so you might end up hunting for spots nearby, which isn't ideal if you're in a rush.
  • It gets busy on Sundays, so you'll probably need to book ahead to avoid disappointment, especially if you're after one of those popular roasts.
  • The opening hours seem a tad inconsistent in the details, with some days wrapping up earlier than others, which might catch you out if you're planning a late one.

First time in the Fat Ox yesterday afternoon. I had the belly pork tacos and my partner had the fish and chips. Best pub meal we’ve had in a long time. In fact best meal full stop. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, oh and huge. The chips, my god the chips were to die for. And my tacos were just perfect as I wasn’t that hungry, but ate the lot. Really good value too. Beer garden is lovely, they mentioned there’s still work going on out there but it’s beautiful as is. We will definitely be back!

This is a fabulous village pub, doggy friendly throughout. The food is delicious - best to book for Sundays. Outside there is a large beer garden. Only 2 parking spaces, but off-street parking is available close by.

Tremendous veggie Sunday lunch at the Ox. The food and service from the team was exceptional, suspect it’s gonna be a regular event throughout the autumn and winter months. Defo give it try and treat the dogs to their own lunch, they loved it ❤️🐾
