About This Pub

Ah, Old Cross Tapas and Grill – it's one of those places that just warms you up from the inside out, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is where they really shine; we're talking fresh, flavoursome tapas and specials that have people raving, like those mouthwatering prawns and ribs that seem to steal the show every time. The service gets a big thumbs up too, with the team making you feel right at home, and now they've sorted out their licensing, the wine options are a proper treat to wash it all down. It's got that cosy, hidden-gem feel upstairs, which is great for a relaxed night out, and they've nailed the inclusivity with loads of gluten-free choices. But, to keep it real, there have been a few hiccups – like the odd instance of staff being a bit brusque, especially over things like their updated 'no bring your own' rule, and the small space might not suit bigger groups or those not keen on stairs. Overall, though, it's a solid pick for a good meal and a chat; I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, just maybe check the website first to avoid any surprises!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think fresh tapas, delicious specials, and sharing platters that make every meal feel like a treat, with highlights like prawns, ribs, and those amazing bread starters straight from the oven.
  • Service is warm and attentive; the team, including Mandi, really go the extra mile to make sure you're having a great time, which adds a lovely personal touch.
  • They've got a great selection of wines now that they're licensed, perfect for pairing with your meal and elevating the whole experience.
  • It's a hidden gem with a cosy, intimate vibe upstairs in Ashton-under-Lyne, and they've got plenty of gluten-free options, so it's accessible for all sorts of tastes and needs.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes come across as a bit abrupt, like in one instance where a staff member was a tad short about their no 'bring your own' policy, which might put off first-timers.
  • The space is quite small and upstairs, so it might feel a bit cramped if you're in a larger group, and getting there could be a hassle for some.
  • Based on a couple of recent reviews, there might be occasional mix-ups or outdated info on their policies, which could lead to a less smooth visit.

Lovely little place, with great service and fabulous food. The large plates and specials are especially good. Mandi and her team go out of their way to ensure you have an excellent experience. And now they are licensed you have some lovely wine options.

Six of us came here last night for a family birthday meal. As soon as we walked through the door, we were abruptly told by the blonde waitress that it wasn’t ‘Bring your own beer’ anymore and hadn’t been for a over year and that it was on the website etc. She felt the need to reiterate this about 3 times before we’d even sat down at our table, much to our annoyance. Complete oversight on my part for telling my family to bring beer, but not an issue for us at all to purchase alcohol from the restaurant. Then, we came to order the food. Me and partner had eaten here before well over a year ago, but the others hadn’t. As there was 6 of us, we wanted to order our food in three pairs, but the waitress refused to do it this way and we were told that ‘our regulars never have any issues’ ordering the way she wanted us to. We were spoken to with such rudeness just because we aren’t regulars! It became a nightmare ordering and we should have just left at that point due to the way we were spoken to. Then the food came out and we couldn’t fault it. It was really lovely and we were all happy. Then my mother in law got a birthday cake out for us all to have a slice of. I asked the waitress if we could please have some small plates and she refused and said we could just have napkins. Again, baffled by this and the bad attitude! Then the bill came out, which we hadn’t yet asked for along with a card machine! The restaurant was quiet but we were being forced out. They had just under £300 pounds from us last night, but they didn’t care about that, clearly by the way we were treated and just want to cater for their regular customers. I have never written a bad review on a restaurant but this was my birthday and I felt how we were treated really dampened the evening. It’s such a shame because me and my partner had been here a couple of times previously and the food is lovely, but you have now lost custom from us and the chance of us ever being ‘regulars’.

Early Father’s Day booking - a hidden gem in Ashton, small inside and upstairs. Food was really delicious, I highly recommend the bread starter with dips as it was cooked fresh from oven. Four of us ordered 3 tapas each and the best dishes in our opinion were the prawns, ribs, tortilla and dolmades. Everything else was really nice too. Very reasonably priced and I will definitely be going back!

We have been many times before and love this place. We took our grandson last night for the first time and he loved it too. We sampled about 8 dishes all of which were excellent. We'll all definitely be back. Many gluten free dishes available. The black pudding scotch eggs, fillet steak kebab with peppercorn sauce, ribs everything we had was delicious.

My wife and I had a fantastic meal. I'm still in shock by how good everything was. I really enjoy my food and am a very good cook which is why I don't really like eating out, but I've finally found somewhere, where I thought the food was better than what I can cook. It was amazing, I'm blown away by the quality and flavours of all the delicious dishes. The king scallops were Michelin star quality, I doubt even the great Marco Pierre white could do better
