About This Pub

You know, I have to say, the Old Bank of England is one of those places that really sticks with you – it's got this incredible history as a former bank from the late 1800s, and stepping inside feels like wandering into a piece of London's past, with all those grand features and a warm, welcoming vibe. The beers are spot on, straight from Hertfordshire, and the pub grub like steaks and salmon hits the mark for a casual bite, especially paired with their delicious cocktails. It's also brilliant that they cater to dogs and have an outdoor space for when the weather's on your side. That said, it's not without its downsides; it can turn into a proper scrum on busy evenings, with queues and a bit of a wait for service, and while the food's generally good, it's not always cooked just right – think overdone burgers that could use a touch more care. Overall, if you're after a unique spot for a pint or a meal with friends, it's well worth checking out, but maybe aim for a quieter afternoon to make the most of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic building and stunning interior make it feel like a step back in time, with soaring ceilings and intricate details that add real character.
  • They offer honest pub grub and fantastic cocktails, plus some solid beers brewed in Hertfordshire – perfect for a relaxed meal or drink.
  • It's dog-friendly and has a lovely garden or outside area, which is great for enjoying a pint on warmer days.
  • The location on Fleet Street is spot on, right in the heart of London, and they have options for private hire like the vintage bus for special events.
Cons
  • It can get incredibly busy, especially on weekdays after work, making it feel a bit overwhelming and hard to find a seat.
  • Service isn't always consistent; you might face waits for seating or drinks, which can put a dampener on things.
  • The food is decent but not always perfect – some dishes come out overcooked or just okay, rather than outstanding.

Prompt service when we found a waitress to seat us. Very busy on a Tuesday after work, mobbed is more like it. We were in a cozy area of the dining room but the bar and outdoor area were wall to wall people. The food was good, not great, we had steak/frites and roasted salmon but we came for fun and not the food particularly.

We stopped by the Old Bank of England pub on a quiet Sunday afternoon, and it was a fantastic experience. From the moment we walked in, we were taken in by the grand interior — soaring ceilings, intricate details, and a real sense of history. It’s not just a pub; it feels like a piece of old London brought to life. We enjoyed a pint of lager while soaking up the ornate decor and the fascinating Sweeney Todd references located in a corner of the restaurant — a nod to the pub’s chilling folklore connection to Fleet Street. It’s atmospheric without being gimmicky, with just the right balance of grandeur and comfort.

The Old Bank of England is one of the most beautiful pubs I’ve been to – a stunning old building that’s very well maintained, with loads of character and a great atmosphere. We popped in for lunch without a booking and managed to get a table inside. There’s also a small garden area at the back. The high chair seating wasn’t the most comfortable, and we did have quite a long wait at the bar to order – it seemed a bit understaffed at the time. That said, the drinks were great! Good selection of beers and cider – I really enjoyed my Aspall. As for the food, we went for the traditional classics – fish and chips and sausages with mash. The portions were smaller than expected, and while the fish was crispy and decent, the mash could’ve used more flavour. Overall, it was a good experience, but the food and service could use a little improvement.

Arrived with a reservation with no one there to seat us. Waited at the bar for 5-10 minutes to tell them we had a reservation. Led us over to the restaurant area and sat us down, taking our order was fairly quick and efficient. Took a long time for our drinks to arrive. Food was okay, the BBQ hunters chicken was delicious but the chicken breast was very small. The chicken burger was not good. There was no flavour to it to be honest, definitely needed some sauce maybe bbq or something else. The chicken in it in some places was as thick as the buns!!! Truffle fries were nothing special, tastes like truffle but weird sauce. No one to look after us after we had finished eating, not offered dessert or another drink which we actually wanted. Took a long time for anyone to come so we could pay. Decor was interesting. Atmosphere was much more drink heavy with people drinking trying to come into the restaurant area leaving negative correspondences with the staff so overall leading to a bad atmosphere. Don’t recommend coming here, much better places a few steps away.

I recently dined at the Old Bank Restaurant and had a wonderful experience overall! The highlight of my visit was definitely the cocktails—they were absolutely delicious and expertly crafted, making for a perfect start to the evening. While I ordered my burger medium done, it came out well done. However, other ingredient was still great, and the restaurant's atmosphere and service more than made up for it.
