About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about Number 39 Brewery Tap in Darwen; it's one of those places that really sticks in your mind for all the right reasons. From what I've gathered, the beers are an absolute treat – they're brewed locally by Hopstar, and they've racked up over 20 awards, so you know you're in for something special. Pair that with a cracking selection of ciders and Belgian beers, and you've got yourself a proper pint-lover's paradise. The live music scene is what sets it apart, though; they focus on everything from jazz to reggae and blues, creating this lively buzz that draws in a great crowd. The atmosphere feels just like a snug jazz cafe, with comfy seating and even a sheltered area out back for a smoke or a breather. Staff are dead friendly too, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly. On the flip side, it's a small spot, so it can get a tad packed, and if you're there for a quiet catch-up, the music might overpower things a bit, especially during those in-between sets. Oh, and it's mostly about drinks rather than food, so plan accordingly if you're peckish. All in all, it's a brilliant little venue that's worth a visit if you're in the area – the high ratings speak for themselves, but do keep an eye out for any changes with the new owners. It's got that authentic, community feel that makes for a memorable night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely top-notch, with award-winning real ales from the Hopstar Brewery right nearby – they're proper quaffing beers that keep you coming back for more.
  • Live music is a real highlight; they host a fantastic range of genres like jazz, reggae, blues, and folk, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for music lovers.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and make you feel right at home, with quick service and a genuine passion for what they do.
  • It's in a handy spot in Darwen, just a short walk from the bus or train station, and there's free parking if you're driving – makes it easy to pop in.
  • Prices are nice and inexpensive, so you can enjoy a great night out without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • The venue is quite small, with room for only about 90 people, which can make it feel a bit cramped on busier nights.
  • Sometimes the music carries on during band breaks, which might make it tricky to have a proper chat with mates.
  • It seems they don't offer much in the way of food, so if you're after a full meal, you might need to head elsewhere first.
  • With the mention of new owners taking over, there could be some changes ahead that might alter the vibe we've come to love.

Enjoyed the band, but why play music when band is having a break? Makes it hard to talk

New owners will be taking over in January 2020 after ten brilliant years of Number 39. The end of an era for the best small music venue anywhere!! Had to laugh at the reviewer who moaned because he entered a music venue and people had to tell him to "shush" - I think that says more about the reviewer than the venue! The owners have ran a great bar and Darwen Music Projects have achieved wonders turning a bar into a fabulous venue! International acts on regular basis including Martin Carthy MBE, Matumbi, Nik Turner's Space Ritual, Merry Hell, Andy Kershaw, Kyla & Victor Brox, Henge.... the list goes on and on.
